Gosh! All of your rabbits are so gorgeous, I'm so jealous! I'd love to own rabbits with those colors and patterns! We grow and breed new Zealand and Californian mixes to sell as pets or cooking. It's hard to keep up with them bc we only have so many does and bucks that are related and so we try not to inbreed

Hey Brittany, Thanks for chiming in and watching! I see you raise rabbits too. What kind?

@Cox Homestead I raise Holland Lops. They are super tiny and fun. We also have 12 chickens and a dog. My niece, nephew, and I love your channel. We only found you a couple weeks ago, but I am so glad we did.

Just a thought..I was watching a series about people put into the wilderness alone who ended up snaring and eating wild rabbits or hares for food. One comment was that even though they had plenty of rabbit to eat they still dropped weight quickly because of the low fat content. You mentioned that allowing them to grow out to 16 weeks made them fattier. Is this fat layered on top of their meat rather than marbled? I would guess this would be the case. Like venison and moose…meat is lean and to grind and make burger requires adding beef fat from out local butcher. Watching in Alaska

Their fat is layered on top. That is correct. Thankfully rabbit isn’t our only source of food, so when cooking I do add a fat. My first choice is bacon grease.

In 99% of cases crossing in giant breeds is only going to hurt you long term. You are going to permanently increase bone ratio for generations and most likely permanently slow growth down. You are actually better off crossing with a smaller faster growing breed and using them to cross back to your main commercial breed so you are introducing finer bones and faster growth rates.

Thanks for sharing. I don’t plan on keeping the offspring for reproduction purposes.

I recall new Zealand and Californian were crossed with Flemish giant to get a larger size rabbit

Sorry I'm adding another comment, KZitem keeps breaking when I try to reply to your comments/reply. I've recently started following your Instagram so I'll be keeping an eye out for any new babies lol. I'm new to Instagram so I don't have a lot of posts or anything, but it's mainly for selling. Idk if I'm too far to buy some babies from you bc I'm in McComb Mississippi 😅

I still consider myself a newby to KZitem. I just looked up and you’re about 9 hours away. We don’t ship. So it’s have to be someone delivering or picked up here.

Where did you get him? I have had no luck finding a French lop anywhere in NC.

I got him here in Tennessee. It has been a challenge finding a doe. And they aren’t cheap. I’ve seen a few breeders in NC. 😊

@@coxhomestead545 I found some in SC. It's about a five hour round trip. $60 a piece, fully pedigreed and the man has a variety of colors. He also shows them.

The people who I found in NC, wanted 300$-600 a piece.... 😢

I paid $150, $100, and $175 for mine. So $60 is a steal!

KZitem reply system sucks right now. I sent a message on Instagram if you wouldn't mind to keep chatting with me, I'd love to get some tips and advice from you. I don't wanna fill up your comments lol.
