Everytime I hear someone talk about how they grow their hair just fine doing mostly wash and go's I get excited cause that's all I do and about all I'm good at when it comes to styling my hair lol. I do wash and go's 95% of the time since I big chopped 2 years ago and I am very pleased with my growth (arm pit length when straightened). Usually growth tips include protective styling but it's just not my thing other than wearing braids from time to time.

I've been using primarily wash and gos since my big chop in 2015 and my hair straightened is bra length now. my tips are: 1) stop swapping products with every new wave that passes on. find what works for your hair and keep using it. 2) dust your ends! create a schedule of trimming your ends and stick with it! 3) drink water. it just makes everything better. 4) enjoy your hair! regardless of the type, it belongs to you so enjoy it all!

I agree with you. I wear my hair in a wash and go probably 95% of the time. My hair is type 4, and not type 3 like yours, but that didn't stop it from gaining length as a wash and go wearer. It's not waist length at the moment, but that is a personal choice. I did let it grow to past waist length, and then decided to keep it cut shorter. Lately I've been thinking about letting it grow longer again, but I only had that thought after I just cut two inches off of it last month! rofl I guess my biggest tip is to keep it simple. I cleanse, condition or deep condition, apply my leave-in, and then my styler either gel or a cream styler. I do my wash and go in the shower because it is quicker and easier for me than trying to do them outside, and since I'm not a KZitemr I do not have to demonstrate to anyone how to do it so I have that freedom.

Just started doing wash and goes on my hair when I thought they’d never work for my hair type (4b/4c). This is the second week. And from the first week I learnt that my hair actually doesn’t tangle, sometimes it just looks like it is, my hair stays defined for days and my hair feels soft beyond the gel cast haha. Now I’ve been curious to know if I can actually wear this style often(every day, all day , for the rest of my life😂) and still grow long hair because my hair goal is waist length and I’ve always two strand twist my hair. My hair looks very fuller in this style and it’s encouraging seeing naturals in your comment section agreeing to your thoughts

My hair is SUPER crunchy on day 1, but by day 6, it’s soft but still has definition. I redo it once a week. That’s all. That hard Gel cast is critical! And I agree 100 percent with this wash and go advice, Cousin! I’ve long thought that so many KZitem videos were a LIE. My hair is also waist length and I ONLY do wash and gos. I don’t know why people call so many of the styles I see on KZitem “protective” styles, with all of the pulling and tension needed to get the style. There is nothing protective about a weave. Sorry. So many “protective” styles require manipulating too much! Wash and gos for LIFE. If a protective style causes thinning around the hair line...guess what? It ain’t protecting anything. I’ve noticed something really interesting too. When I get compliments from other black women on my hair, they almost always mention versatility AND my curl pattern. Here’s the thing: you can’t have BOTH. I have good definition and a solid curl pattern because I don’t have ANY versatility! I don’t blow my hair straight ever. Not even to cut it. No curling irons. No rollers. No braids or cornrows. I don’t do “protective” styles. I don’t wear wigs or extensions. I would LIKE more options, honestly, but you gotta make a choice. ANYONE can have a gorgeous wash and go...but they would let go if the idea of versatility. That’s just my OPINION. It’s not a rule. But if you want lovely, consistent curl pattern, you can’t mess with it. I wish I’d known all of this when I first went natural. I would’ve saved myself a LOT of torn out hair if I did.
@smiller4606
6 жыл бұрын
chris Allen it can work both ways. It's really about low manipulation and moisture. I had to cut my hair short once and wore braids for about a year after. My hair grew to waist length. Same thing happened when I was wearing my version of a wash n go. To each her own.

It’s been a real struggle finding a wash n go routine that works for me, but I recently found something that works for me! I find that when I do a wash n go, it will last a lot longer if I allow my hair to air day at least 3-4 hours (or as long as possible) Then, use my blow dryer on the COOL setting, on high speed with a diffuser attachment, while gently pulling my hair downward, to avoid a lot of shrinkage as it’s drying. Once I’ve gotten the shape that I like, I use the cold setting all over my hair. When I do this, my hair does not shrink up as much, and I love the way it comes out. The gel cast definitely wears off a little bit but not completely. I’m able to get defined hair for 5 days by doing this! Also, your tips are always so helpful and you always keep it real! Thanks for showing that it’s possible to grow long, healthy hair while wearing wash n Go’s!!

I keep my 3c/4a hair in a wash n go 98% of the time. When I want a break (sick of the SSKs), I'll 2-strand twist it up and let it rest for a few weeks (re-twisting weekly so it doesn't lock up). This stretches my tips and stops breakage. I've gone from a 1/2" TWA to 15" MBL in 3 1/2 years (with LOTS of trimming along the way).

Awesome video! The beginning of this year I said I wanted to focus on hair growth and healthier hair. I found that deep conditioning and leaving my hair closer to its natural state (wash n fro and flexi rod set) allowed me to be able to massage my hair and grease often. For the first time in 3 years this year I’ve seen consistent growth 1-2in a month alternating products so my hair doesn’t get addicted to one. Using under $5 products. Thanks for the confirmation!

Yes to all of these! I agree, with the possible exception of the first tip. I've always held to that principle -- hell, I've taken my w&gs to two weeks believing in that very principle, but now I'm starting to rethink it. I think the key is not necessarily how often you style your hair, but how often you thoroughly detangle. If your hair maintains moisture AND definition, thus preventing tangles, throughout your w&g, then you don't have to detangle as thoroughly next time you hit your hair w/ water. Thus, I think (I'm still experimenting) doing w&gs that last 2-3 days, co-washing and lightly detangling when those days are up, and then regular wash day at the end of the week is just as beneficial as 7+ day w&gs. So far, doing this, my detangling time throughout the whole week has been shortened greatly. I spend like 45 minutes in total through the whole week on washing (including regular wash day) when doing w&gs that lasted forever and only washing once in the week took me anywhere from 2 to 5 hours, depending on what my hair went through. And yes, those times include shampooing, detangling, deep conditioning, allat!
@noisetalker

I have gone 9 days with NO problem with detangling...using okra gel kills ALL that noise! Okra gel has MANY uses it can be used in the prepoo process as well as styling...I've added a little to my deep conditioner too

I agree with your tips Amber. You have to find what products work for you and technique. My wash n go last at least 7 days. Now that the heat is on I moisturize x 1 during that time. I have similar hair as yours - low porosity, fine hair. In the winter months I twist my hair and call it a day for at least 7 days. I oil my scalp with my hair oil concoction (Wasted my coins on so many in the past and didn’t like them) and scalp massages. Yes... your tips work - no magic here.

I have low porosity hair. I use Camille Rose butter aloe gel or whatever it's called. I've never applied it to dry hair, but on wet and damp, it glides on so smoothly and is easy to distribute. And it doesn't leave a residue when dry. I did a wash and go for the first time since starting the pre-poo and LC/LCO regimen and I was like "my coils and curls look bomb! but why is it so crunchy?" 😂 Now I know it was a gel cast?! I had full shrinkage, though, and didn't want to go to work like that. so today, I saturated my hair and and let two strand twists sit for about an hour before untwisting. It stretched my curls and coils a bit and I loved it! I had waves on the roots of my dry hair when my waves usually never stay when my hair dries! And my coils were still popping, but there was definitely less shrinkage. If I do wash and go again, that's what I'll do and I recommend it to others who like wash and gos but have a ton of shrinkage. Untwist when your roots are like 40-50% dry. The twists will be damp inside. Don't fluff, just gently separate/blend and stretch downwards when you do it. If you want more volume, gently tug upwards by the roots.

Ok cousin. I have always had a cast and thought I was doing something wrong because I hear people saying their hair is soft. My roots are soft but the cast is crunchy elsewhere. I agree it does make for a good week of style, but my hair does grow, I don’t have that problem but I just thought I was doing something wrong because it was stiff. I didn’t know how to break the cast so I just dealt with it. What you’re saying also makes sense that the leave in and whatever other products that are put in before the gel should be doing its job and the gel is the barrier to keeping it in. Curlfriend thanks. I’m good. I recently found a method that works for me, I use a leave in, hair butter and gel. Moisture and a not so hard cast. I finally got my wash and go down so I’m good.

You're hilarious lmaoo I'm cracking up. I am having so much trouble getting a routine down cause some people say high porosity hair needs cowashing everyday and other people say only once week *sigh* dis tew much

I think you should experiment to see what works for your individual head of hair. I am type 4 low porosity, with a short tapered cut. I read that low porosity peeps should not co-wash daily due to build up. I however, do wash and gos every day or every two days, co-washing during the week and cleansing/ clarifying and deep conditioning with heat on the weekend. My hair prefers jellies and custards. I tend to use one-product wash and gos. This regime is working for me so far and prevents build up. Try different techniques and see what works for you

I LOVE wash n gos and to me they are low manipulation styles because when I wear a wash n go I hardly EVER touch my hair. My curls stay defined, my hair stays moisturized, and I can get a good 9 days out of it with no problem with knots or tangles. All I do is put a bonnet on at night and mist lightly in the morning and that's IT!

I know that you're talking about wash and goes, but i dont wear them and i wanted to just say that you're right :D Shoots i wear my hair in twists the majority of the time (which is all the time) and i use a gel and i need the gel casts because i dont do my hair all the time and keep it in twists for the majority of the month washing in between and redoing it. My hair is midback length now and so it helps. Ove your videos btw ❤

I totally agree about the gel cast!! My hair doesn't tangle at the ends and it's not so frizzy!

Okay okay okay cousin.... You made me want to start back using gel..... No lie I stop using gel a year ago and it was good for the first month then it stop growing.... I've been waist length for over a year now... I know my hair should be growing longer and I think it's due to not having that barrier no more.... So gel casting back I go...

And a wash n go tip I have is after you style shake your head so the curls can kinda unclump and fall naturally and if you are stretching your hair 5-7 days spray a little water on your hair and scrunch through w/ a light oil

I know you did one awhile back but could you do a new summer wash in go product favorite and tutorial. Especially with this heatwave going on around the world this would help. It’s been 110-120 degrees over here in Southern California and my hair feels so hard at the end of the day...suggestions please sis!!!

Interesting I did a wash and go and i kept it in for a week and it was really good. So I washed my hair today(wash day) and my hair felt thicker and fuller. I was very shocked because I always do twist outs and blah blah but I’m going to do wash n go 100% of the time ☺️.
