I bought your Malabar spinach (木耳菜) seed this February. I used 8 seeds, washed and rubbed them, and put them in my raised bed. Now I have 6 Malabar spinach. Each is about 1 foot long. Hopefully, my Malabar spinach will grow as tall as yours. I have never tried this vegetable in my life. I can't wait to taste it.

兔妈早上好!God bless you and your family!

I went to my local Asia-pacific market that had a fresh produce section and found the green malabar spinach under the name Mon toi. It was a bundle about 15" long. It has many names around the world. I ate most of the larger leaves and rooted about 10 stem cuttings in water, only took about 2 1/2 weeks, and then I pottted them until its warm enough to plant outside.outside.

I think I watched this a year ago, my trellis is now filled with malabar spinach and it never runs out! i can get like 1-2 cups of cooked alugbati without even making a dent. Im thinking of pruning the vines to make it look pretty. Also the main vine looks like thick and woody like a tree. This plant is amazing.

I just planted this veggie a week or so ago here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (I planted green variety like in this video, we also have red variety). I bought a big bunch of this veggie for just RM1 (USD0.40), I used the leaves and soft stalks to cook as a delicious soup. But I saved the harder stalks/stems with axillary buds. Now, my malabar veggie is bushy in the pot when the buds sprout out into long leafy stalks, I need to build trellis soo so I can get bigger bush to harvest. In Malaysia we call mayong, remayong and pucuk raja. One of my favorite veggies in Malaysia, I normally cooked as soup with shrimps (fresh or dried) or dried anchovies added, then I would dump in stirred eggs (1-2 eggs). Very cheap in Malaysia, something that really kills my motivation to grow veggies in Malaysia! Hahaha!

I put this in a garden bed at the beginning of June. Took forever to germinate and now it's taking forever to grow. Everything I read says these grow like crazy in hot weather, but it's been 80s and 90s here since I put them in and they're only just now getting their second leaves. Cold weather will be here before I get anything to eat from this complete waste of time. In future, I'll start them under lights for more than a month before I put them in the ground.

Alternatively, to can let the plant flower and get the purple berries that come later, they're very high in antioxidants and pigment so they can be used for dye, that also means they stain so be careful! It's best to harvest the whole stalk of fruit once it fully ripens so that you don't risk staining anything

Funny to hear this vegetable called Malabar spinach. Apart from local names like 'amunu tutu', alaari- for the red colour type or safara' we call it Indian spinach. Can overrun small gardens if let alone. Great taste too. Well done

+Gizmo b It looks like the temperature is too cold at the beginning. After you move indoor, not enough sunlight so it won't grow... Try to keep the plant alive until next spring when weather gets warmer, then bring your plant outdoor where sun light hour more than 6h a day.
