So I actually managed to grow a citrus tree from seed of fruit at a grocery store. I live in Georgia, which is near Florida in the United States. I started it indoors, inside of a peat moss pod, inside of an old clear plastic cake container that acted as a greenhouse, and underneath a grow light because where it was located, there wasn't enough sun light. As soon as it grew to be about 2 inches, I removed it from the container, took it out of the peat moss entirely and put it into a fairly large pot. Basically, I allowed enough room so that I would have to repot it for a while. Like double or triple that pot size. I planted it into a soil that already became with fertilizer, and was meant for citrus trees. I also added some perlite for aeration. I kept it inside until it for to about 6 inches then repotted it into a larger one, and I brought it outside occasionally to introduce it to outside sunny weather. At night, I brought it back in. I did that a few more times in spring. Then by summer, it stayed outside everyday. I would go outside and pluck leaves from it. The much larger ones, after smaller leaves emerged from the same spot as the large leaves. I cut off all low branches to avoid it catching disease. They say it will grow bigger if your pot or land is bigger. I wanted mine to be ornamental. I honestly am pretty terrible at watering my plants, but I remembered to move it. Put it where it can get enough early sun instead of evening sun so that it won't burn the leaves. Another thing is, Georgia is quite humid during summer. Oranges are known to grow super well in Florida and they are SUPER humid there. So instead of constant watering, try introducing humidity as well.

The roots are sensitive to transplanting.when sowing an orange/citrus seed it needs partial shadow and not direct sun and it needs a year or so to be transplanted.growing onions and garlic beside it keeps insects away and make soil healthier
Your videos are always so relaxing. I’m an avoid gardener as well. I don’t use chemical fertilizers. I use a lot of natural resources like egg shells and food compost. You’ve inspired me to grow foods from seeds from produce you get from the store 💛
Give it another try in larger pots from the beginning instead of transplanting them. They seemed to grow fine in the small ones and struggled afterwards.
Noringo-san, where in Japan are you? I know Mikan usually need warmer climates to grow just like oranges and tangerines which is why they're usually grown in prefectures in the south like Wakayama and Ehime. If you're north of those areas you could try growing it indoors. While I have many friends who live in Japan and have been studying, it isn't good enough for me to respond with it so even though I wanted to reply in Japanese I used English. Good Luck!

I've been there... It's sad and mysterious, but I've been succeeded in growing some citrus plants, too. Right now I have a three year old lemon tree (with so many fruits they even touched the ground), a 5 year old kaffir lime (currently in a dormant state), and two 4 year old lime trees...one barren and one have some fruits.

In the first year I cover it with a plastic dome and that gave it a hotter and more humid environment which citrus fruits tend to enjoy. I would have also brought it in a little sooner as once the cold temperatures hit it, the leaves will start dying off quick
Super interesting! I was wondering if like for lemons mikan need to be grafted to have decent fruits? (For people who cannot read Japanese, these are mikan, not oranges - much smaller in size :) ).

It's sad that the orange tree seems to be struggling. I hope you'll have some success with them! オレンジの木が苦労しているようで、悲しいです。少しでも成功すると良いですね!
To successfully grow these you have to grow them indoors and keep the humidity high with a high acidic soil. They are only OK to go outside during the summer months when their about 2 years old.

I managed to grow out a seed I spat out while eating a tangerine, and it was just starting to germinate. I took that as a sign and placed it in a pot with black soil and a little sand, now the tree is growing well over my own height and I don't trim the branches out as much as I should. It's doing well, but so far hasn't produced any flowers. The pests I have to look out for are white aphids and caterpillars. The latter exclusively targets my citrus plants for some reason.

I use to germinated the citrus i plant in place with shades until its sprouted . It grows nicely. I think the problems was lies in soil, bcs i'm using the different kind of soil and yours a little bit rocky. I dont even add the chemical fertilizer, only egg shell .
