You can transplant them but the results suck many will die or at the least be stunted... I've tried this method it's not the right way to go about it... Either drop the seeds where you want them growing and DON"T cover them with soil they need light to germinate properly or use Jiffy pellets and then transplant them.

Thank you for a very clear and precise demonstration! I love that we get to see the transformation of the seedlings from start to the end product. I sow too many seeds without labelling and I unknowingly threw out some poppy seedlings because they look like weeds here. However, thanks to your video I know what poppy seedlings look like and will not throw them out now. I don't know my climate zone here but I know it's called the Mediterranean or temperate zone. I have 1 month of Winter left, is it too late to sow poppy seeds into my garden beds?

Do I cut the poppy seed heads off (after they have dried out and replant them at a later date) or do I let the green foliage / plant remain in the ground, as have read that the roots remain dormant?
@LearnHow2

Hi Noreen. If you leave the seed heads on then they will self seed to give you new plants next year. Alternatively cut off the seed heads and some of the foliage and the same plant will regrow and flower (sometimes in the same year but generally next year),

I have several seedlings growing in containers right now....you just need the right soil a pot that is really deep to accommodate the long poppy roots and some wire netting to keep the birds from eating your seeds.. Some of my pots are actually 5 gallon buckets that I got for free and drilled holes in them for drainage....i love 5 gallon buckets for this because most of mine are at least 19 inches deep....buckets have the added advabtage of being easier to move around than regular pots....its real work to move a pot that weighs 50 or 60 pounds so the plastic buckets are great being light weight.....id love to find an 8 gallon bucket that is from 22 to 24 inches deep....the deeper the container the healthier your plants root system will be...

I have essentially zero gardening experience planning to grow poppies next year and this was really informative, thank you. Is there any particular benefit/reason you germinate them in the tray instead of directy sowing the seeds outside?
@LearnHow2
3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Starting in a tray allows me to start the seeds indoors in the warm a few months before they would germinate outside. This gives the plants a 2 month head start when planted out late Spring. Germinating indoors is more predictable - I control the water and the heat to give ideal germinating conditions. Outside temperatures/rainfall can vary enormously to such an extent that some seeds dont germinate. Good luck with your growing and keep safe.

The type of poppy you are looking for is called the papaver somniferum (Opium poppy). It is legal to grow in the U.S.A. The seeds from this poppy plant are commonly used in cooking. However if you are caught milking or using the poppies for any other purpose than agricultural or culinary you could be subjected to criminal litigation. I have these growing wild on my 65 acre property and once they get established they can grow easily (depending on climate). Truly a beautiful flower and an amazing plant.

Do I need to plant them in clay-like soil when they are ready to be planted?

Hi Ashley. No plant them in 'normal' soil. Unfortunately my soil is poor so I just have to work with it.

How can I harvest the opium from the poppies?
@EmmaGoldmanlovesyou
Жыл бұрын
My poppies that spilled and got damp sprouted on a cheesecloth, how can I transfer them or how can I keep them alive? They’re now sitting on a plate, with little seedlings all around the edges. But there are some mildewy ones in the middle. I’ve always wanted poppies, and I’m about to build a small garden. Any help??

Take only the heathy seeds and carefully put them in small pots of compost (one or two per pot). Cover them with compost.

Not if you bought the seeds but if you collected them from flowers then they will need to be put in the refrigerator. Keep safe.

The "established plant" leaves looked like leaves from an entirely different plant than the young ones you planted out. Was it a different variety? Also, the leaves on the poppies I have started look very different from either of your poppies.
@LearnHow2

I can assure you the early plants and the established plants are one and the same. The poppies you have panted will probably be a different variety to mine. Keep safe.

How much time did it take from maturing small plant to planting? Mine seem to be stuck as small plants for a month now😑
@LearnHow2
3 жыл бұрын
About 6 weeks. If stuck then problem is a) too little sun/heat b) poor soil (add fertilizer) c) pot too small and roots cant develop.

@@LearnHow2 Thanks for the advice. 😊We won't have rain for at least a week, so I will move them off the south indoor patio, outdoors and see if the full summer sun helps them.☀️

@@LearnHow2 Also, 1. Why my poppy plants wilted in the sun eventhough its soil is moist? 2. Its also super thin and falling on the ground? 3. My poppy plants leaves are too small and turning yellow. Sorry for too many questions.

I'm glad to see you show me how to transfer poppies from seed tray to pot and then pot to garden, but you do seem to be breaking what is asserted as a cardinal rule with regards poppy; DON'T TRANSPLANT - POPPIES HATE TO BE TRANSPLANTED! I saw one knowledgeable youtuber suggest, after showing us how to germinate seeds on kitchen towel to test if they are viable, that there is only one place for these sprouts once they've germinated and that's in the bin because they hate being transferred. I've heard others suggest transferring must only be done as a last resort, because they will not grow very well if at all once transferred. My suspicion is that transferring will likely limit the size of the plant, and possibly the success rate, but there are infinite reasons why you might want or need to transfer poppies and it would be nice to see someone demonstrate how to do so with a poppy plant, i.e. at what stage and by what means, so thank you. I may need to draw on your teaspoon method to save a few poppies that are growing too close together!

I transplanted about 12 poppies when I made the video. Not one of them failed. Maybe I was lucky, maybe I had a variety that was ok with transplanting.

They probably get stressed very easily..id use a longer tool to transplant rather then a spoon so you dont upset the delicate roots...then water with a liquid fertilizer thats made for stress recovery..i use Seasol in australia..its amazing at boosting plants and natural..within half a hour the plants are happier
