Thanks for naming 2 slow to bolt varieties. Last year, I got 2 baby leaves per plant in a container then it bolt. Because I forgot about it, that planter is now a thick carpet of 1 inch seedlings. We received over an inch of rain yesterday so they have a chance of surviving unless the baby bunnies find it. Go Jets Go!

Valerie Howden do you grow in shade? Mine loved morning shade. My broad leafs sit in the SE corner of an open field, bordered by creek and forest. Pumpkins didnt like it due to moisture. I never had to water the garden. Raised beds, horse manure with sand base and weed cloth below sand. Covered soil with black 6 mill plastic. All kale, spinach, and mustards grew prolifically spring into late summer when they turned bitter and bolted. Bolting was never an issue fore 3 months of production. Let bolt, get tons of seed and restart.

Buck19 thanks for the tips. My raised beds get at least 10 hours of sun right now so I'm better at growing tomatoes. New beds will hopefully get more shade and I have to work on my season extension because we kind of skip the cool temps of spring.

My favorite spinach is Space, as you mentioned. It all survived in my zone 6b garden this last winter without any cover whatsoever, and produced lots and lots of leaves before starting to bolt just the other day. I sowed more of it just over two and a half weeks ago, and I actually could start harvesting baby spinach leaves right now, really a fast grower. Will have to try some of that Red Kitten spinach this fall, looks delicious!

Spinach does well here in the West of Scotland. Through the summer I grow mine along an east facing wall so it only gets the morning sun from 4 am to 11 am and is protected from the remote possibility of harsh afternoon sun. The east facing wall also allows me to extend the season for my peas which also prefer cooler conditions.

Timing is crucial when growing spinach in zone 5. Last frost date is April 21 and it froze that night. 3 weeks later and it was 85 and has stayed hot. My lettuce is still doing fine but once again a big spinach fail! :-( In Kansas we really don't have spring anymore. It goes from Winter to Summer. It's been that way for a while now. I will have to try growing this fall under cover. Thanks for the tips.

At the opening of your video I saw some yummy Miners Lettuce poking up through the spinach. (It's the plant that has sort of a heart shaped leaf with a little flower in the center.) I like Purslane. I bought seeds for a cultivated variety but you can also eat the wild type that grows in damp soil and is considered a weed--but isn't invasive. I bought seeds for the Miners Lettuce. I let it go to seed and have lots of volunteer plants the next year. "Saltwort" is a good Japanese green. These are all early spring plants. I like Pinetree Seed Company. They have all sorts of strange seeds for sale--like the Saltwort. The packets are smaller so they don't cost as much.

Would it be beneficial to sacrifice a couple plants to bolting for seed production, allowing for a more value added garden space? Last year i sacrificed 8 indian mustard spinach plants and wound up giving away about 500 seeds. I have probably a couple thousand left. Two lids worth in a sandwich ziploc. If i had to buy by the packet, i produced a solid $20 in seed off one square foot.

Does your garden get darkness at night? Looks like you have a lot of neighbors... My neighbor put up a bright high security dawn to dusk light a few years ago. Since then, I have had poor results from my garden each summer. Things that used to do well just go to seed right away, or grow poorly... some things just yellow and die... Even if its not effecting my garden, its still annoying and a danger to me. but I asked him several times and he wont do anything about it. Do you think having a light shine on my garden all night would ruin it? the neighbor told me the plants will love the extra light. so he thinks he is doing me a favor. I think he is ruining my efforts. I don't know what else to do, other than build my fence twice as high... I am about to get pamphlets from "darksky.org" and stuff his mailbox full of pamphlets....

There's always some light on the garden at night, but not a bright security light. I would also find the light annoying, but I don't think it would harm plants.
