A few years ago, I tried to grow the slips from a sweet potato from the store in water. No luck. Then I tried a sweet potato in soil = success and much easier to me. Last year and this year I used the sweet potatoes from the previous year's harvest and put them in soil. I just have them on the shelf in front of a window and already have slips and roots growing like crazy. In one video I watched, the lady had a hanging basket of sweet potato slips growing in her kitchen window. She picked the leaves off to use in a stir fry or salad. I'll even use the leaves in scrambled eggs.

The hanging basket is genius! I'll have to try that. The organic ones from the store should be able to sprout. I agree on the soil being the better of the two. 🙂

a lot of nurseries grow cuttings in sand. you might do well with sand instead of water so the water doesn't get yucky. there are rooting hormones too that you can put on your cuttings to make them root sooner and less rot. also, the little heating pads might be real good for keeping them warm even if they are inside. the pad warms from the bottom only costs like 15 on ebay

The water doesn't usually get yucky, but it has happened before. And I try to show different ways to grow stuff without equipment in case they don't have access to it either. Thanks for the suggestions though.
