Never had any real success with tomatoes until I used self-watering containers after starting indoors from seed. Even here in WNY, they are very thirsty plants, like peppers. If I miss a day in the garden with the hose it makes a difference. In high summer, tomatoes here are thirstier, and need watering twice a day with mulch and amendments. Even the self-watering containers need refills every two or three days, but the results are worth it, because the soil moisture is consistent. You can make your own or buy fancy grow boxes, according to your budget, both work equally well. Cherry tomatoes ripen much sooner and can be frozen directly from daily harvesting, with just a quick wash, no peeling or blanching. Great in sauce and chili, or fresh in salad. Super Sweet 100 is disease free and has a great tangy flavor. Love little Tuck and his veggies. My dog would only eat sweet cherries and spit out the pits.

I've been a beginner gardener for about 8 years but now that I'm retired I'm hoping to become a novice soon, with the help of experts like yourself. I've always pruned the bottom leaves and taken off the suckers in the early life of the plants but after awhile I just let the plant do its thing. Should I be taking off the suckers the whole time? I found your channel about a month ago and have already learned so much. Tuck is awesome. I love seeing him in your videos. Yorkies are my fav. I hope to have one someday soon. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and thanks in advance for a reply. Happy gardening!!

I hear you about the "last frost date"! Our date is May 17th, zone 4 Canada 🇨🇦. I now wait until at least June 10th to put my tomatoes 🍅 and peppers 🫑 in the ground. I've been impatient and planted some out early June ..... then we get a frost warning! 🤬 They were fine because I would double cloche them and also cover them with fleece. So happy to see you and Tuck back in the garden 💕! PS Excellent tip about the gardening journal! My garden is gradually getting bigger and bigger, and I have to start writing everything down! Hey James! I’ve been watching you for about 2-3 years now, and you’re my biggest inspiration to do a food forest and make a better garden! I had a question though, last year I tried to start my seedlings with worm compost, but none came up! When I used a dirt mix for seeds, then they started. When should I use worm castings in my garden, I feel like it was too strong for the ungerminated seeds. Thanks!🌱
@birdsofafeather7606
2 жыл бұрын
Yeah worm castings are high in nitrogen and way too much nutrients contained in them. seedlings need a more neutral soil. kitchen scrap compost if finished and cured can be a good medium. Worm castings are good to add when you see flower buds and fruit buds. However, too much nitrogen will stifle fruit production and encourage all leaves. Follow the package directions when adding to existing garden/native soils. Worm castings are a good amendment to add to the bulk of a more neutral prepared soil, or dress the sides of garden rows on the surface and dig in a little.

Your energy is so fun!! Two varieties of tomato for you to try: Marizol Gold, yellow pink beefsteak, can become huge, 2-3 lbs., tastes like you put sugar on top. Black Sea Man, purple brown beefsteak, can become more huge, 2-4 lbs., rich flavor as if red wine were poured in, and so sweet. They're heirloom, indeterminate and maybe kind of hard to find. Mine came long,long ago from Seedsavers exchange in Decorah, Iowa. Pat Tuck for me.
