I started my Vanilla orchid a year ago Feb 5 as a two foot cutting. It now goes up my trellis and splits. Sections are about as big around as my index finger. It is in indirect light with our other orchid and seems to be loving it.

I don’t use sunlight. I have my vanilla orchids growing under 5000K LED shop lights in a large plastic storage bin inside of 5 gallon ziplock bags to keep the humidity up and the 12 cuttings I bought on eBay are all growing like crazy. Shop lights are as good of LED lights as more expensive Grow lights if you make sure the color is correct. I use 5000-6500K LED lights. I visit Santos Brazil and enjoy seeing orchids growing wild in the trees and at their orchid park(orchidaria) and buying dirt cheap orchids at shows there. I recommend it. The beaches are beautiful and the people are very friendly. Food is fantastic and very inexpensive. Greetings from Washington State. Great video! Thanks a lot.

I just received cuttings and we have dry air in Washington state so I put the cuttings on a chunky organic material and put everything in a large ziplock bag with an opening to allow air flow. I just checked after a week and there was root growth! I have them under an LED shop light with 5000k color. I visit Brazil often and in Santos there is an orchid park with thousands of orchids growing in the trees. They even have orchids in the trees along the sidewalks around the city. It’s orchid heaven. I bought about 20 orchids and left them at my girlfriend’s house and they are thriving. They were dirt cheap.

I have a question. I'm in Memphis, TN, so obviously we get good heat and good humidity during the summer months. My question is, would it be alright to pot this in the house during the winter/cooler months and then take it outside in the warmer months? I want to grow it, but I just want to be sure I don't kill it with the price of the plants.

Hi Mr. Luke! Yes, I did learn something new! And yea... I have questions... so my dad said I should grow vanilla (because lately I've been growing a lot of seeds to make into bonsai) and yea now that I know it's a vine that will change it up a bit... but I still love growing and this seems like a fun plant to grow. 1. Does it produce a lot of pods 2. Can I grow it from the pods 3. Does it take a while for it to sprout (the seeds) 4. If I grow the plant can I make trimmings to make more vanilla vines 5. Is 90°f-110°f Ok? (They'll most likely be indoor though) 6. If I can make cuttings, how should I cut them? (Idk if my bonsai cuttings are working or if cuttings just root very slowly. It's been about 2 1/2 months and I think I see a little bit of something growing out) 7. How long should it take for the cuttings to root? (If I can make cuttings) Thanks! (Sorry to annoy you about this 3 years later😅) P.s. I have never held a real vanilla bean in my hands

You forgot to say you can plant any and / or all of your cuttings to grow more plants. On that note, if you can get a cutting from an older specimen, it will cut your need to wait so long before you start getting blooms. You will need to pollinate the flowers yourself.

Great video and great tips. I am growing mine in a mixture of the sphagnum moss it came in and orchid bark. It has a small bamboo stick next to it for when it starts climbing.It started it out just in the moss under glass but transplanted it a few days later. I am spraying it with miracle grow orchid spray and water.. The roots in the soil fell off during transplanting but are growing back. All the aerial roots dried up though. Any suggestions for getting more of those to grow. Right now it is growing in the bathroom to get steam from the shower.

Thank you very much for the video! I just received my 6in cutting yesterday and I'm getting ready to pot it. I guess I should have paid more attention to this video earlier and just bought the Moss instead of spending eight bucks on the Coco choir trip Park and another $4.50 on rooting powder LOL I'm sure I can find another use for the rooting powder or hopefully return it and I'll give my mother the Coco choir chip bark for her orchids or I'll buy some other orchids that will want to grow in that Medium. So I'm nervous about planting like cutting but I'm told they grow like weeds so this should hopefully work. Thanks again! I want to search for some more videos on growing vanilla on your KZitem page, so hopefully there are some there

How do they do in DIY greenhouses? The ones with aluminum framing and translucent plastic covering? I also heard they take 12 years to mature enough to produce the bean pods. Do they die at that point or keep living/producing? If they continue living after they sprout pods will they do that (sprout pods) yearly or every 12 years or what?
@sportjunky4371
9 жыл бұрын
***** Wow 12 years? someone gave you some misinformation. They take a minimum of 2-3 years to flower. And then the beans take about 6-8 months on the vine to mature enough to be picked. I have mine in a heated humidified greenhouse and they thrive. They also don't die after one crop, they can produce for a number of years. Like the guy said though, they need tropical conditions so if you have less than ideal conditions for them they will grow muuuuch slower. the 12 years thing might have come up because in the wild, the vines can climb 30 metre tall trees and as long as they're climbing upward like that, they generally don't flower until they reach the very top. So in the wild it can take longer, but in farms they train the beans in different directions to stimulate flowering. Also each individual flower has to be pollinated by hand if you want to get a bean from it.
