I don't know why I haven't taken this test yet. I work on this equipment almost daily, have worked in datacenters, wireless environments (macro and DAS), virtualization, etc. One thing I don't see mentioned often and I think it's still the case with Cisco, if you get your CCNA, CCNP, Security, etc all you have to do is retest for your highest level cert and your others renew automatically. So the higher up the totem pole you go, the easier it is to keep your lower tier stuff current. Best of luck out there future CCNA'ers!
@TheBeardedITDad

You are correct about renewing your lower level certs! You don't need the cert if you work on the equipment often but if you ever have to change jobs it helps a lot to have it.

A word of advice for someone looking to purchase network equipment. Be careful where and who you purchase it from. Buy from an authorized or trusted dealer because it could introduce malware to your network. If you do cheap out, put it in a sandbox so it cant affect your network or devices.
@TheBeardedITDad

when you buy used gear you should always factory reset it before connecting it to your network... but with that said i think its unlikely to interduce malware.

Just found your channel and it’s great! I did have a question for you : I currently have 1 year of help desk experience with a MSP and am a couple months into studying for my CCNA. I feel extremely confident I will pass, but do you think I need ‘lower’ certs such as A+, or Network+ to apply for sysadmin roles? Would it be any type of red flag if I apply with only 1 year helpdesk experience and only a CCNA cert? Appreciate your channel and videos!
@TheBeardedITDad

Since you are already working in the field you dont need any lower certs. A+ And Net+ are really for people that are looking to get into the field and have no experience. since you have a year under your belt your golden. Good luck on your CCNA let me know how it goes!

Just getting started with studying for my ccna. I have no job experience in the IT field. So far this stuff is coming naturally to me and I'm an excellent test taker so I think I will pass the exam just fine but I'm wondering if I'll be able to circumvent the super basic entry level stuff like working a help desk. My people skills are a little lacking. So far it seems like network analyst would be a good position to aim for but I can't seem to find a clear answer on if that's overly optimistic or not.

It is definitely possible to skip the help desk but definitely not going to be easy to do.. help desk is kind of a sort of right of passage for many people and even though it's basic, it builds up the necessary foundation to build a career... If you're looking to skip to help desk, I definitely make sure you have your CCNA and work on your people skills. Your soft skills for the most important skills to have an IT field. And if you're going to be able to skip the help desk, those soft skills have to be really good.. also, why you're studying? Look and see if you can do some volunteer work to build some quote experience..... Hope that was helpful. Let me know if you have more questions

Well, I finished my studies back in 2011 as a network engineer, and since then, I only make stuff for my friends, etc. I work in the reception department of hotels, but it's really easy to do that job. In my place, it's hard to work in IT, so that's why I do this job. But now I plan to jump into action because not everyone can do this work. My first goal is to get the national certification, and after CCNA and much more, I could. I wonder what jobs I can do as an entry-level employee once I get at least CCNA plus other certifications. I will stay on this channel for the experience you share with us, plus your guides. Thanks, m8.

I tried to study the CCNA 2 years ago....wit zero experience. Studied 4 hours a day or couple of months. Failed twice. Part of the problem was I was really overwhelmed with amount of knowledge you have to remember. Second, was the questions. I seriously only saw maybe 40 % of subjects I studied for. The rest were really strangely worded. I could not figure what the question was asking. It was as if a non English speaker wrote the test. I had to double check to make sure I took the right test. I am seriously doubting I can pass this test without serious help. Gonn start with the IT fundamentals and work up from there.

Same, but the problem for me was procrastination. I have ADHD and dyslexic but I was not diagnosed so I can't request accommodations. I cannot study despite I had a whole year of studying because my ADHD brain only allows me to study in the month before I take the exam. I procrastinate and my Time blindness messes with me. I seriously took the CCNA course four years ago and I have not read all my study materials for over 2 years since I bought until the month I am taking the exam. I did fail it twice. Luckily, I got a voucher for free from work and 1 free retake from Pearson because my first try had issues loading the terminal for the performance questions. The third take is also free because I got another voucher from my work due the issue I got, so I got three vouchers. If I pay the 300 then I will have more motivation. I did pass the Network+, maybe go for this exam to motivate you. However, I also procrastinated and miraculously passed it.

My biggest disagreement with this is the practice exams. Especially for the CCNA, there are no trick questions like other vendors where you have to be aware of how they ask questions. The level of readability on the questions are about 5th or 6th grade level. . . the level of content in the question though requires detailed experiential knowledge which is why I agree with the labs. I always advocate for doing no practice questions whatsoever.
@michaelcook5585

Why on earth would you recommend AGAINST one of the most useful exam prep strategies a learner can employ? Practice exams allow the learner to determine what they know well and what they don't, allowing the learner to zero in on the knowledge areas they're weak on. I never have, and never would write a certification exam before doing several practice exams to ensure my knowledge stands up to scrutiny.
@hdmaragh
9 ай бұрын
@@michaelcook5585 because the questions for IT exams are copyrighted. Meaning if it’s on the exam, the practice tests will include everything guaranteed to not be on the exam. Pretty much mastering the practice exam is pretty much mastering everything most likely not on the exam. The second issue with practice exams is that they never cover the full content. Look at any of the practice question guides, they’re less than 1/3 the size of the material, in other words just by volume of content they don’t cover all of the content. Next, sometimes the reason why a person tests poorly on some sections is because it’s really not that critical to the exam, a lot of test takers take the feedback, they go master the most minute portion of the exam while missing the review of the most major portion (I do know someone who failed the CCNA because the practice tests said they were weaker in the network automation section, while sufficient in the other areas… they then focused on network automation… they got 100% on network automation but only 40% in IP services, the practice test put his IP services at 80% previously, but because he hyper focused on where the practice exam said he was weak, he ended up majoring in a minor area and was pulled into sense of okayness) Finally “you don’t fatten a hog by weighing it” this means you have to focus on feeding a hog in order for it to gain weight. Allegorically this is like studying vs testing… testing is like weighing feeding is like studying… As for my experience now, I’ve obtained over 30 IT certifications and have never done a practice question, I focus on reviewing the content over and over and over again to the point that any question I could get I can answer. Those 30 certifications including the CCNA all obtained within 14 months, I only have 17 months of IT experience so far. As for professional levels, in that time I’ve been promoted 6 times and now am Senior Network Engineer leading a team of Network Engineers and Administrators. Because I focused on drilling the content and labbing, I was able to gain more knowledge and skill than just answering questions correctly and that translated to workplace competence. All this to say, review questions are overrated and while they help people feel more comfortable, they don’t really help much with actual prep. I spend all my time going through the content again and again.
