I don't understand why they keep saying the preamble would be used to calculate the bitrate. If you know the frequency of the signal, you know the bitrate. The receiver is tuned to a specific frequency, so it would already know the bitrate. Also, if the receiver is tuned to a specific frequency, calculating bitrate doesn't matter. The preamble is only used to start the message transaction. I think someone on the show probably read about Ethernet frame preambles, which are very similar, and got the term "synchronization" confused. Synchronization in Ethernet frames doesn't mean that the oscillator synchs. It just means the receiver can identify where the message begins and ends.

+EthanBB It's in the screen captures from our laptops. You can see it in the smaller text on screen which is one of the reasons we typically increase the font sizes, especially in the terminal. ~Darren

Love this channel. Thanks so much for all the great info. I haven't yet purchased a dongle to start playing with this stuff yet in person, but I'm fascinated and have been soaking up your shows on RF quite happily. The info on manchester and binary shift keying reminds me of a question I had from 1909: In terms of pulling the recorded wave into an audio editor like Audacity, are you aware of any app or script that would pull the wave and scan it for off/on or shift-key translations into a binary representation (rather than having to manually count the peaks and wavelengths and possibly mistake a 3-length for a 2-length, etc.)? It seems like there should be a way to pull the waveform, set a fuzz level (squelch?), and do some relatively simple measurements to translate the waveform into low/high -> off/on data. If it doesn't exist already, I'd be happy to take a crack at it.

18:15 Is there a way to adjust the Transmit power on your dongle? Maybe you could turn it way down,to avoid 'issues' with any neighboring devices, since you're only a foot away from your 'target' receiver.
