Since you mention heat stress and you showed the background of your pasture, what do you do for shade in the summer when their cell is in the middle of the pasture? Does their water lane also take them to shade on one end of the pasture?

Very good question. We are going to have to create it…stay tuned this summer

What cooler and warmer weather grasses are you using?
@grazing3654

Wheat/perennial rye are the cool seasons and the warm season grasses emerging are primarily Bermuda and crab grass

The concept of "2 +3" baffles me. I understand it for brittle, dry environments with relatively unimproved livestock. But, the "2 + 3" concept has been the EXPECTATION for most ranches in the USA for close to 5 decades. Maybe it's a situation of regional differences. But, I would guess close to 80% of 2nd calvers have done that since the late 1960's in my area. With that said, some have finally pushed the performance envelope enough that a higher percentage of those young cows are now failing.

The issue is that conventional producers are allowing themselves to be pushed into higher weening weights (bigger frames) and therefore a lower conception rate on 14-15 month heifers. It’s important to hit that 60-65% of adult body weight to cycle at just over a year.

@grazing3654 not quite. It's way more difficult to get the second calf than the first. And, 60-65% bw as a yearling is precisely mainstream thinking. Rangeland research over the last 20-25 years says they don't have to be that large to be successful. Look up Rick Funstons stuff at University of Nebraska.

There’s a lot of clover popping up where we’ve grazed. I think it’ll seed itself
