📛 Some helpful advice regarding DIY suspension and exhaust replacement..📛 Back in the mid 90s, I bought a '66 Chevy C10 short bed, step side truck that had been sitting uncovered in a pine forest for years. It still had its original 250 6cyl and powerglide, which ran great after an oil change and about 30 mins of runtime. But it needed shocks, a muffler, and a new exhaust pipe. At that same time, I'd just met a DIY classic car home mechanic who did all his own auto repair, EXCEPT when it came to exhaust and shocks. He recommended paying a reliable mechanic to do that work, because of all the likely headaches involved with dealing with 20-30 year old rusted, seized bolts, and headaches involving exhaust pipe fitment, etc. 👍 So I paid a specialized muffler and suspension shop to replace all 4 shocks + a new muffler and a new pipe. I paid something like $350-$400 for everything, and I used that truck daily for work, for over 2 more years before it's original, unrebuilt engine finally swallowed a valve. 👉 It seems to me that the advice of NOT doing your own shocks, is completely valid(unless you definitely have a shop space, all the necessary tools and experience, and you are 100% prepared for the potential serious headaches you may run into).

Good common-sense video! My dad bought a 74 Malibu and found the back shocks were blown and the springs were very soft. I found embedded dirt in the back bumper. Apparently the former owner used it occasionally to tow farm equipment in the field! So we put new shocks, tires and rear cargo coil springs and that thing cornered flatter and better that it had a right to. Aftermarket stuff (Moog) made it nearly neutral once a good suspension guy dialed it in.

The truth is brand new these cars handled fairly well, the first thing that goes on them is the shocks, stock shocks were only good for the first 10,000 miles on cars like that and there's a reason for that, when the suspension is brand new and all the bushings are tight the type of shocks that work good then are inadequate after 10,000 miles when all the bushings get seated in and aren't super tight that would give the car a harsh ride when brand new, people who would test drive a brand new showroom car wouldn't get that and would think that they'd be buying a car that would ride like that for it's lifetime, so the manufacturer's installed shocks that gave a smooth ride when brand new. The stock shocks the manufacturer's put on those cars usually had single stage valving in them, after 10,000 miles when the bushings would seat in they were woefully inadequate for the demands placed on them, since that change happens slowly over the first 10,000 miles people don't really notice it, anytime after that when you put on a decent set of multistage valved shocks on a car like that the change is instantaneous so people get what's happening then. I'm ASE trained and certified on suspensions and used to work at a Midas that was on a stretch of road just outside of a major city that had high end car dealerships like BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Cadillac that lined the road on each side of us, we were right in the middle of them, some of our customers who understood the principle of stock shocks being undervalved on brand new cars for the sake of ride comfort would buy a brand new high end car like one of those and bring it directly to us after picking it up, they wouldn't even take it home, they'd bring them directly to us and drop it off and say "Put the good stuff on it" because they knew the deal with shocks on new production vehicles. With the exception of cars that had automatic or manually adjustable shocks for different road conditions like Corvettes that had settings for road/track replacing stock shocks on brand new vehicles is still an upgrade especially when they hit that first 10,000 mile mark, that's really when it starts paying off. After about 50,000 miles when the sway bar links would loosen up and get enough play in them it was like there's not even sway bars on the vehicle, with that much play it's like they're not even there, I've helped friends over the years who've bought older cars from the 70's get the suspensions set up on them, it's like I've explained to them, the basic engineering for a good handling car is there, between bringing everything up to spec and today's tires you can have a very good handling automobile even by today's standards without it costing you a fortune.

Even without suspension weight is still transferred to the outboard tires from the inboard tires because the car's center of gravity is above the ground (where the tire contacts the ground). The tires squish (sidewall). Assuming tires that are solid (ie: solid steel wheels) there would not be enough traction, but weight would still transfer.

Suspension in itself is a science on its own . Back in the mid 80s we entered the Skoda Trophy a national rally championship for the Skoda 130L . A rear engined European car . This car was the Butt of all car Jokes . We built this new standard shell car into a Gp A rally car . After going through the car build full roll cage stitch welded shelll. A mild tune and rebuild on the 1.3 litre engine . The engine needed running in for 1000 miles . We took it in turns . I even took my dear old mum out in it for a Sunday afternoon drive . She was a good sport . After the engine run in . It got its first service. Oil etc . Then the tarmac rally suspension was fitted too . This car with maybe 110 bhp was a dream to drive . Handling with upgraded suspension transformed this car massively. Even out on main roads giving it some beans it always lifted an inside front tyre . Bearing in mind she still ran standard road tyres at this point . Once it had cut slicks fitted it was even better . Suspension can work wonders as long as you know what you are doing . Great video Kevin & Angus not forgetting Mook too x

Thing I like about GM cars is its easy to do suspension cross over to save a fortune . For example I had an 84 Pontiac grand prix . I bought beefier sway bars for it but everything else was GM cross over . On rear I used springs and shocks for a 78 Olds cutlass Supreme ( 350r ) and on front I used 80 Cadillac springs and shocks . I did try Chevy s10 spring and shocks on rear first . For track that was great but on road it was uncomfortably stiff . Even my current project , 97 Integra rs , has lots of Integra cross over parts . While it's got a full skunk 2 suspension the brake and rotor upgrade was simply from a 97 gsr ( high output vtec engine code ... just don't remember code off top of my head ) . The clutch is a high performance Type R upgrade and transmission is a Type r transmission ( 97 ) . Learning how to cross over parts is how you really build a budget street car . Granted for track purposes this isn't always as effective but it's a good start for a budget track car as well .

I would have to disagree with the" biggest bang for the buck being shocks and tires". In my extensive road racing, autocross racing and used to work at a Porsche performance shop when i was younger. , I personally would recommend the best anti sway bars AND tires you can afford. Now if your shocks are blown out that bad yes, shocks are needed for safety. But with a stock car with ok shocks, 100% biggest difference would be tires and Anti roll bars. That way it still rides smooth with stock shocks over bumps, but handles corners night and day difference with good tires and anti sway bars. QA1 and other companies make great anti sway bars.

Something I learned from Kevin over at KSR. When road tracking a stock seat belt. Put the seat back from where you normally sit. Lock the belt, then move the seat back up. Keeps you a little more snug and less back n forth

Great video! I don't think you mentioned it but geometry plays a significant role when you are putting modern soft sidewall radial tires on a vehicle with a suspension designed around 50s-60s bias ply tires, or even early hard sidewall radials.

The stock is too loose for driving and for whatever Angus is doing with the Camaro. The QA1 Shock is very stable, the car doesn't go all over the place. Plus, the comedy doesn't get old 🤣

My friend has a oldish bmw e36 and in the netherlands there is a cub you can do with cars that may not be over 500 euro's to buy... So he does track day's . He bought a set of Chinees adjustable springs and shocks and it is so mutch better now. Together with the grippy tires and the bigger motor ( from a 2.0 to a 2.8 ) and it's been on a diet....lost almost 400 kilo's....it is a different animal.... Great video again....thank you.

I love how in the comparison photos the car was in the exact same spot on the exact same road, and the driver’s head was in the exact same position!

My parents drove a 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis with severely worn shocks on it. The car had over 100,000 miles on it at the time and the shocks were the original ones from the factory. And I decided to put some new shocks on all the way around shortly after I bought that car from them because I didn't like the way it handled. However,I was told that the coil springs on that car got a little worn down from driving on shocks that were complete toast since they were taking the beating that shocks were supposed to take. I even spent the extra money to have some heavy duty shocks put on the front and back of my Silverado since I am forced to drive on some of the worst roads in Michigan.

Loved it! Not sure what looked better. I really liked your Stevie Wonder imitation, “swaying side to side as it lean around a turn”. Then you went into football referee mode officiating a game with all the hand gestures and arm motions. “While keeping the tire flat on the ground while the car is in motion”. lol.

Great explanation of a complex system. Long term though, the bushings in that front end are as crap as the sway bar links and those rusty A-arms are thin from rust. On a car you are going to keep, do the entire QA1 conversion. I have a light resto-modded 70-72 Monte Carlo. It was going to cost me just as much in stock parts to replace the entire suspension as the full front to back QA1 coil over kit. Except, the QA1 kit added a rear sway bar ( and better than stock), heavier front sway bar, and those awesome adjustable shocks. That car has never handled so well in its life. So much more fun to drive and safer. Did it all off of jack stands in my garage with medium mechanical knowledge. So worth it.

I put a set of sensatrac shocks on my old supercrew Night and day. Ride became almost as nice as a chibby pickup. I don't recommend those if you haul or tow heavy loads.

Let me have that camaro. That is EXACTLY what I want in a car. I want an 80-82 camaro with the Z28 package solely for the decal on the side and that color is amazing. I love how it’s faded. Literally a my dream car. I love it

Suspension theory is like philosophy. Worth mentioning is that a great autocross car might be shit out on the road. Number one question that should always be asked and thoroughly answered before changing anything is - what kind of driving do I do, and how do I wish the car to behave during that kind of driving?

I know that if you have a lot of understeer getting a thicker rear sway bar can help, at least on my car, a honda crosstour. For years people have been using the 22mm sway bar out of an Acura TL SH-AWD and it completely changes how the car feels on its own, i think the stock sway bar is 12 or 14mm and all you need to change it is the sway bar itself, 2 new bushings, and maybe 2 hours of time. Back when the car was new people figured out this could be done and the sway bar was probably 50-60$, now that same sway bar costs 150$, so thats fun.

Polyurethane bushings make a big difference too, and not very expensive but I know this car likely still has leaf springs. That feeling of the frame stiffening up on turns and the confidence level u have is pretty amazing. I have em on my S series with stiffer springs and struts.

A very nuanced view on suspension- not every build NEEDS $3500 coilovers. I added bilstein shocks and a nice pair of progressive springs and it rides better than stock while handling MUCH better.

One of the things I like so much about the Mopar RWD cars, the steering link is behind the axle, so the akerman geometry can be maintained much better. I'm pretty sure that this F-body front end was maintained into the redesigned '77+ B-body, so my '95 Impala SS has essentially the same front end as this Camaro. Thing rolls like crazy if I have to dodge to avoid something in an emergency. I'll have to finish the video later to see besides shocks what was done, a beefier bar would undoubtedly help but there's a point where it's uncomfortable to drive and I don't want to end up there.

My son bought a 4x4 SUV, that had 200,000km for a good price, but driving it home on the freeway, every time it hit a bump in the road, I could feel a strong kick back through the steering wheel. The factory suspension is torsion bars on the front with shocks. Just replacing the pooched, oem original shocks on the front dramatically improved the ride and eliminated the kick back through the steering wheel. Our next problem, was it taking 24 seconds to go from 0 to 100km/hr.........so we took off both the factory cats (in series) on the 4 cylinder engine, and bashed their cores out......and it got down to 14 seconds.
