Teenagers also called teens or adolescents are those who are above 12 years of age and younger
than 20 years. This is the age of transformation when children become highly emotional and cannot
be good at logic due to changes in the body. It is a challenging phase for the parents and children
and even the calmest and most experienced parents look for solutions during this transformation.
The most common issues are disrespectful behavior over sensitivity independence privacy frequent
arguments and mood swings. These are imbalances in the body due to endocrine and physiological
changes. The prefrontal cortex area of the brain which is behind the forehead gives the ability to
concentrate and think logically but does not develop completely and the limbic part of the brain
which controls our emotions lacks proper control which is why teenagers show erratic behavior and
mood swings they are more concerned about emotions, looks sometimes demotivated super
excited. Yoga is a science based on a holistic system of practices and works as a complementary
medicine for many mental health issues. There are many studies with proven positive effects of yoga
on young children. Yoga is a combination of posture breathing exercises and relaxation techniques.
Teenagers love to face challenges so the practice of cycles of Surya namaskar in a dynamic way is a
good choice for them. Asanas like Jaanu Sheershasana and Pashchimuttan develop flexibility in the
stiff back. All backward bending postures help to open the heart chakra and are very good for the
lungs and heart. They help in bringing emotional stability. Anti-gravity postures like Shirshasana
sarvangasana and halasana help to develop perseverance in them. They should be taught about
counterposes and girls should know about the restrictions during the menstrual cycle. Twisting
poses are good for the core muscles and digestion they help in maintaining proper glucose
metabolism in the body. Backward bending postures help in the flexion of the spine and they give
more space to the diaphragm to breathe properly. . As per yogic philosophy, there are three
qualities of nature known as Gunas. The pure and positive quality is known as Satvik Guna the active
and dynamic quality is Rajsik guna and the dull and lazy quality is Tamsik guna. The mental health
benefits of yoga for teenagers not only affect their daily lives but secure their adult lives in the
future too. We can help them during this challenging transition time with a positive attitude and
patience.
