The method I use to harvest worm castings (poop) from my DIY worm bin takes a bit of time, but not a lot of effort.
I am upending the bin and allowing the worms to move to the bottom of the bin pile. Worms don't like light so they will move to the bottom. I can then remove the top layers and repeat the process until I can harvest as many worm castings as possible.
I use water soaked shredded paper as my bedding material and fill the bin up half way with it. Then I can add any worms as I am harvesting castings back into the waiting bin. Once I harvest all the castings I can, I return what's left of the pile with all the worms into the bin. I feed the worms (cut up kitchen scraps. the smaller the better) and then make sure to cover the food scraps well. I can use either leaves or more of the soaked shredded paper.
Sifting the worm castings is not necessary, but I like to do it. If I find a straggler worm as I go, I add it back to my bin. Adding compost worms to your garden is not ideal, as that is not their ideal environment.
The worm bin is an 18 gallon tote from Walmart with six large holes drilled in the bottom, and small holes drilled 1 inch apart around the top edge of the bin. There are NO holes in the lid.
Having enough castings to make a harvest worth it can take up to six months.
Worms like temperatures like us. Neither too hot or too cold. My unheated garage works well for both summer and winter as it never gets too hot or cold. I keep an inexpensive bluetooth thermometer in the garage to keep track of temps. amzn.to/3WOHWJF
Compost worms are NOT the same worms from your garden. They are a species of worm that don't mind being confined to small spaces (which means if they have what they need in terms of food and moisture they won't try to escape) and can power house their way through food scraps)
I purchase my worms from New Soil Vermiculture www.newsoil.org
