I am not a Jew, but have been wondering about observing a sabbath like day for about 4 years now. Its funny that I've just come across your channel and here you are confirming what has been deep down my heart all along. I think God as the creator or 'manufacturer' knew how we humans function. We so need a day of rest to recharge in our dizzyingly busy world today.

I married a North London lad who is jewish. Parents are reformed but grandparents were orthodox. His grandma and great aunt have the numbers tattooed on their arms from the death camps. But since my MIL has passed I've taken over cooking for Shabbat for my father in law. We then stop over and they go to shul and I make stews in the crock pots too. I've also now mastered making challa. I use the salads the next day to go along with whatever soup or stew that I've made prior in the crock pot. So Saturday is our day of rest. And our happy place is the beach. So our day of rest is going surfing for the day. I had a lovely 3 mile swim.I think there is something about being in the water of the sea that is just so good for one's physical and mental health. Less tv and computer games and more being outdoors. But after sunset I start cooking again! on Thursday I will plan the following week's meals and purchase the ingredients on Thursday and then start cooking when Shabbat is over. Which makes it just a matter of coming home, boiling some rice or pasta or a baked potato and defrosting soup or lasagne, chili con carne. When you both are working and have a young child, it just made life so much easier for us.

As an orthodox christian we keep the day of Sunday for rest and prayer and going to church. We don't clean or work around the house , but I think I could try not cooking and watching TV so much. And the phone. That s a tough one. Although when done by all your dear people ,it must get easier. You inspire me . Thanks. Have a nice day.

I'm with you: I'm Byzantine Catholic which has its roots in orthodoxy and also has a tradition of Sunday as a day of rest (me. I've really tried to adhere to this concept, but it's hard not to "work". My local church has Saturday evening services, and I like the concept of starting the Sabbath the evening before (in our tradition as well the "day" starts the evening before). Shabbat practices are inspiring and a lesson to the rest of us to be diligent in guarding that time and using it as a true day of rest. I often cook on Sundays, but I like the idea of preparing in advance and not cooking on Sunday - I like the idea that there will be a nice meal all ready for me and all I have to do is to enjoy it. I might try that. Giving up TV would be harder. Again, thank you Chana for being willing to share!

I am a Christian but I do practise a seventh day Sabbath sundown on Friday nights. I don't do it the halakic way as I am not a Jew but I do think that it is pleasing to and makes me feel closer to my Jewish Messiah to practise some form of seventh day Sabbath. I have found it very special and I look forward to it all week. I admire and appreciate the Jewish people who have set for us an example of how to keep and protect the day of rest. I do not get into the nitty gritty of all the rules around the what you can and cannot do but I do appreciate the basic principle behind it which is doing whatever you need to do to make a hard stop from work and protect that day with all your might because of our natural inclination to do do do.

Our closest friends in college were Reformed Jews who lit their candles for Shabbat regularly, We alternated hosting dinner almost every Friday night, and I learned about lighting the candles and Havdala from them since they lit candles in either apartment, With the busier college lives, and class schedules, Saturday was not always part of their observance but I felt peace in setting aside our Friday nights together, I am enjoying learning about the additional parts of Shabbat that we had to forego at that point in our lives.Thank you for sharing.

Hi Chanah, we have our day of rest on a Sunday in my family. We always end up checking our phones and doing some shopping which goes so far against my beliefs. My husband checks his phone for work stuff for the next day etc etc. I have decided that we need to take it a step further though and really turn everything off. I have been discussing observing Jewish celebrations more seriously, as Christians we have always enjoyed things like easter and christmas but I have always felt more naturally drawn to observing passover, shabbat and all the other jewish holidays which has so much more meaning to me from studying the bible over the last few years. Thank you for your hints and tips they are very helpful indeed.

LDS (Mormon) Sabbath (on Sunday) you don't work unless you have to. And you can't go shopping, or out to eat. You can't get gasoline on Sunday either, unless it's an emergency. Oh, and you have to go to church. And then fast and testimony Sunday is every first Sunday of the month, and you fast for two meals, and put an offering in the envelope for two meals worth of money to go toward humanitarian needs. We weren't allowed to do laundry either. My husband was kind of controlling. He had to watch me clean the house in order to believe that I actually did clean the house.

I am not a believer, but a day of rest sounds idyllic. Except it sounds like the way you get rest is to shift a huge number of tasks to either before or after Shabbat. Do you end up feeling like many of us do preparing to go on vacation? By the time I have tackled the preparatory to-do list, I arrive at my vacation exhausted. I love seeing how happy you are, this life clearly agrees with you. Torah Observant Jewish women are marvels of logistics.

Sunday is my day of rest because it is required by my faith. It starts at midnight and ends at midnight. Right now, I only observe Sunday Sabbath according to the laws of my church. I am not allowed to shop on Sunday... just like you can't shop on Saturday. I am not allowed to mow the lawn, sew, or do heavy manual labor. I am allowed to load the dishwasher and do light chores that do not exceed 2 hours. However, I think I would like to try to fast from technology and observe more of the Jewish laws for Shabbat... like having the food prepared in advance and having a nice Sunday dinner with the good dishes. Hello! Thanks so much for watching! Great questions:) I didn’t know the answer to the frozen food, but found this in a google search: “Frozen food is considered “dry” (unless it has ice crystals or frost on the outside) and, unlike liquids, may be heated (under some conditions) on Shabbat.” Definitely check with a rabbi if you’re needing Shabbat observance advice. I do pre cut foil, but that’s it :) we use containers instead of plastic wrap mostly anyways so that’s not an issue, and we can use tissue (Kleenex) instead of toilet paper. I would have a hard time not doing arts and crafts. I could try cutting out electronics for 1 day. I have done that. My husband would love to get me to take walks with him. Are board game and card game allowed?

Board games and card games are totally allowed for Jews on Shabbat (as long as you aren’t writing anything)

I'm curious and it may be a stupid question but what happens if someone in the family gets sick on shabbat are you then allowed to drive to the doctors or hospital?

That’s a great question! Yes, we absolutely drive to the hospital on Shabbat. And we can drive home on Shabbat from a hospital also because home is considered safer than the hospital

Hi, I love watching your videos. However, I have a question, I feel like washing dishes by hand is more work than a dishwasher. Why can you not run a dishwasher? Thank you so much! 💓

Great question! What we consider work on Shabbat is not the same definition that we think of in the modern sense :) It’s based on work done in the desert when building the tabernacle.

@@jaroffireflies One more question, where do I go to read more about the Sabbath laws other than The Old Testament / Torah? I am a Christian, but I have been studying about the Jewish people and I am so intrigued. I guess that's how I found your channel. 😍

@@JamieTKirby so there are books for Jews but I’m not sure if that’s what you’re looking for? You could just work on creating a day of rest.

Channa do you do any crafts on your Shabbat? And is that a thing a Jew can do?

Great question! No, I can’t do things like knit or sew or cut on Shabbat.

My rest day sounds like a great occasion to fit in some learning about judaism. In our times, learning takes place mostly via online courses or topic relaxed videos. Would this be an acceptable exception to the rule not to use a telephone/computer?
@jaroffireflies

You could absolutely learn on Shabbat! Many in my community do. My husband has regular learning every Shabbat and there are often classes. I sometimes learn with friends and pre-Covid was part of a learning group that met on Shabbat.

No. There’s no emergency phone. If I have an emergency I can call 911 or drive to the hospital etc

@@pernille8071 so I have family members nearby who could contact me me in person for something big. But we just get all our news after Shabbat :) Last week for example I had a family member announce her pregnancy on Friday night (she’s not Jewish) so I didn’t find out until Saturday night.

@@jaroffireflies Congratulations to your family member! I guess the point is that we accept to have other priorities for one day. I have just discovered your channel, so many interesting topics, and such a warm, down to earth way to present them. Thank you again.
