You could make a go, no go plug gauge on a cylindrical grinder.

So the HT process, you get your kiln up to 1875 and how long do you have the blades in there for?

OGP high precison measurring system, common tool used in industrial manufacturing. Companies replace equipment every so oftern, look on the used market for an older system.

Thank you for your feedback. I'll keep an eye out for the OGP high precision measuring system.

A coordinated measuring machine (CMM) can measure the hole the way you would want, other than that a inside micrometer. The CMM has a small probe that will touch all the sides of the hole and give you a readout. The pin gauge blocks seem to tell you what you need to know though.

Can i heat treat stainless steel with a normal forged of charcoal? Just asking......
@GillianKnives

Anything is possible, but it would be really difficult. You would have to control the temperatures with a thermocouple, and hold the temperature stable for the soaking times, all while not looking at the stainless steel colors, because the metal would need to be in the inert atmosphere (read in the pouch).

How come you don't quench them in oil?
@GillianKnives

I have quenched with oil in the past, but had issues with my blade steel becoming warped. The plate quench method that I currently use, mitigates the blades warping during the quench, if not outright stopping it altogether.

I have a question! I have some random stainless steel laying around, I cut out a blank and tried to put a edge on it, it's almost impossible because it's so hard! My question is can I skip the hardening part and just temper it??? I'm new to this as you can clearly tell, I'm just doing for fun, I dont have a way to harden it, I don't want to build a furnace or buy one LOL. Great video learned a lot!!!

To get a usable knife, you’ll have to harden it. You can make a serviceable throwing knife from unhardened steel. Stainless steel is hard to harden because it requires precise temperatures to be held for a specific amount of time. You can actually hear treat simple steels by using a campfire, or even just charcoal grill. A big bar of 1084 (a super easy to heat treat steel) will run you about $12. You can also use files and leaf springs, but you have to heat them red hot and let them cool super slowly in ash or vermiculite. I made my first knife by taking a hardened file and slowly ground the blade to not overheat it. There’s no easy way, but the simplest is to buy a bar, cut drill and grind it a bit, then harden and temper, then finish grind. Just split the task up into multiple days.

Get the appropriate set of Deltonics tenths pin gauges. That'll solve the fine tolerance hole measurement issue.

Sure you’ve found a way to measure by now. But I use deltonic gauge pins in tenth increments. There expensive but you probably don’t need too many just .2490 to .2500
