When I had a flashback for the first time in front of my current boyfriend, he was so sweet. He asked if he could hold my hand and gave squeezes, then he put his bass in my lap. He was holding me on the ground from behind, my body on his chest, and told me “we’re going to learn how to play ‘you are my sunshine’ okay, baby? Because I always think of you when I hear it.” My hands were pretty limp and at first the idea made me anxious because I was thinking there’s no way I could move and it would just be embarrassing, but he held my hands up with his hands and moved my fingers, slowly drawing me out of the flashback bit by bit(: edit: someone brought me back to this comment a year later… our wedding is in 5 months!!!(: we both play music together.

Having to deal with panic attacks and very slight dissacociation, I feel helps me understand this pretty well. Flashbacks are a whole new level of course, but the ground rules are always the same: ask, don't do anything that could scare/stress the person in that moment, be gentle, use words and slight touch if the person allows it.

When I have a flashback, I feel trapped with no way out which has caused me to leave my body, but I've also awoken floating upside down over my body. I used to sleepwalk as a child and girlfriends said they have conversations with me, that it seemed like I was awake when I was asleep. When I was four, my handlebars came loose while I was riding a bicycle downhill. The next thing I knew, I regained consciousness while walking home with blood dripping down my head. That was the first of four concussions, the worst was when I was eight, hit by a car, and was in a coma for two weeks. I briefly came to and felt warm and heavy but no pain even though my femur and ankle were broken. I was completely flooded with endorphins. The next thing I knew, I was awakening from the coma. I suspect that the accident is when I learned to leave my body.

Not a system, but have learned more about dissociating here (many thanks ☺️). I didn’t have the word for it or understand why it happened so much during conversations, but this video was incredibly validating. I knew I was dissociating/feeling floaty, but now I know it probably has to do with flashbacks (was likely more confusing since it was limited to feelings).

Just a lil' thing to mention: Only give help when asked to. Never force ppl to accept your help, trust me it's gonna make things worse. You might cause more distress to the person and make things go horribly wrong, even if what you are trying to do is "for the better" of the person concerned. Remember that (again) the person going through a flashback most likely have went through flashbacks before and they were able to get out of it. Be patient, and be someone who the person concerned truly needs [We're an OSDD system that formed a month + ago so yea this is what we wished for ppl to know if everyone around us knew we're a system :)] - Jesse from The Chaotic Bunch

Not sure what that was but a little bit before the 7 minute mark there was a loud clapping noise, headphone users be warned! Also if I have my hands near my throat it usually means I have soreness there and I'm trying to massage it so it stop hurting. Another reason to ask cause if you don't know what the person is actually doing, I'm sure from an outside perspective it could look like I'm trying to choke myself but I'm not, I'm just gently massaging a sore spot. I had an ex who I told her my positive triggers just in case but then she started using them intentionally causing switches just because she wanted to talk to another alter and I got switch headaches a couple of times because of it. Was annoying and partly why we're not together anymore. There's other reasons as well but more personal and not relevant at the moment so rather not go into it.

I was at work, the other day, when I had a flashback. It was not a "complete" flashback for I only had the physical sensations. Not the noise, neither the sights nor the emotions. Only the physical feelings. All my coworkers looked at me like I was some sort of weirdo... A couple of minutes in, one of these coworkers understood what was happening and helped me grounding, and getting out of my flashback, slowly... When I asked him how he recognized I was having a flashback, he replied "Takes one to know one", and I NEVER would have guessed this man would have flashbacks... Never underestimate the amount of people you'd be able to help remembering what's said in here, at you may come across someone in need when you least expect it ! Tw: use of terms regarding mental health Secondary trauma is even a common thing for mental health workers. Especially when they are working intensely with a patient. I personally never experienced this by a patient of mine, but got it based on issues that my partner was struggling with. If it happens close to you and repeatedly, it could rewire your way of thinking and reacting. It can even develop in the "genuine PTSD" (for lack of better words) if repeated or combined with personal experiences.

I have CPTSD and I really appreciate your videos, they help me a lot in understanding my own trauma and the effects trauma can have for others, not just me. I tend to have a lot of emotional flashbacks with just like...little sparks I guess...of a particular memory. It's hardly ever the full memory, it’ll spark and I'll start to remember something, feel like I'm no longer in the place I actually am and then it feels like my brain panics and does a little reboot. If this happens to you, you can use your techniques because you're so powerful and quick." Saying "you're safe" makes it worse for us. We also prefer to let other Alters in our system we're close with coach us through flashbacks and we'd rather be left alone by outsiders. I know this is only partially related to the video, but Seraphina inspired me to share a little about my cat! I hope it makes you smile. She was rescued as a kitten and has never been trained as an ESA, but she responds immediately to emotional distress. (TW- discussion of panic attacks) About a month ago, I was super close to a panic attack and she immediately woke up, came over to me and gently bit my hand to ground me. She rarely ever bites, and the way she did this was very careful and deliberate as to not hurt me, but to draw my attention. She did this until my breathing slowed, then she went around beside me and purred directly into my ear. She sat with me, making eye contact and kneading my arm until I was able to move, then when I sat down, she moved to my lap and fell asleep. This all helped me to avoid a full-blown panic attack, and I am so grateful. If ever anyone breathes too fast, or seems upset, she immediately picks up on it and gets up ready to help, until she knows they're ok. Her name is Gizmo and I think she's 3 now? I also have another cat called Luna, but she doesn't have the same empathetic intuition (love her to bits though). I feel so lucky that Gizmo is a part of our family, and am so overwhelmed by how supportive she has been.

(In my experience) Consent and trust is so key. During events of intense emotional overwhelm, overestimated (for ADHD and spectrum folk) or even mild psychotic episodes, using frequent reassurance, physical touch, finding a calm safe space, and speaking softly and gently has really helped. I appreciate a very specific video regarding how to help someone during an episode or flashblack. Thank you.

Great video! I'm so happy that you have Seraphina! Every video that she is in it is easy to see that she is truly helpful for you and that she reacts to how you're doing. It is wonderful to hear her purrs and to see how you react to her! I used to have huge issues with food intolerances, before I really knew what triggered those. It would mean about every week a "session" in the bathroom with me having diarrhea and puking at the same time. I would sweat but shiver from cold, my skin would be itchy all over.. My kitty at the time, Simba, was amazing. She would always come to me, whenever possible sit on my lap, otherwise just stay with me and purr. It could not have been pleasant for her with those smells, but she always stayed with me and I cannot express how much she helped me. I will always be grateful for my little lady who left me 5 years ago at the age of 17. She was my rock. It truly looks to me like Seraphina is to you what my Simba was to me and it is so beautiful to see ❤️

Hi guys, so I have a question about DID, my question is: Can DID or things that only people with DID have it seen on a brain scan, now of course it’s not genetic so I know it wouldn’t be right there, but maybe the parts of trauma, memory etc, could those look different and be recognized on a brain scan. I’m not being specific I’m just saying brain scan because it could be any way but something that sees the productivity of each part in the brain. I’ve done a lot of research and found many articles of people who claimed that they have an experiment with people with DID and people with out, on the other hand I found articles explaining the science of why it cant be recognized via brain scan, it’s a difficult question and it’s okay if you don’t know but I’m just curios

My best friend puts his hand on the top of my head, it helps me a ton when I need grounding bc my head feels the most disconnected from everything.

In the second half of the video, the cat could sense Kya hasn't fully grounded so she's making noise and asking for attention to help Kya ground Getting a support cat was the best decision i hope she always helps you whenever you're in need!

That hand squeezing thing seems really helpful. When I have flashbacks I feel really betrayed and disgusted and broken. So when my partner tries to hold me or comfort me it makes it worse but I didn’t have anything to say besides don’t. I get really stuck and scared and if I try to use touch or something to ground me I feel like I get even more zoned or disassociated. But I think the squeezing could really be helpful

I've come up with a grounding technique that GREATLY helps our system and might help others, our friends and partners have practiced this with us. It goes like this "Can you tell me everything you can see thats red?" Then once I finish naming the things, they move onto another color, and then another, and then another, until I'm grounded and feeling better.

What might help when someone is hurting themselves is hand-under-hand, so if you have a permission to touch and try and pull their hands away, don't put your hand over theirs, put it under. Its what they do with people with dementia, makes people feel more in control and comfortable

i don't want to share all the details, as I'm not sure they'd be okay with it (and i have weirdly bad memory and I can't remember everything), but i think I've seen my best friend have a flashback once (they have DID, and ptsd i think). it was in a car (both in the backseat, so we were safe) and they grabbed my arm and held tight on my hand the whole time. it was scary, cause i didn't know where we were would be that triggering (i thought it might be but they never seemed to think it would be, as they had talked about going there before) and they were really panicking and upset. but i just held their hand and we got to somewhere else and the rest of the day went okay. but this video makes me think i should ask them soon about what i should do if they seem to be having a flashback again.

i really don't mean to seem pushy, but i'd love to see footage of some flashbacks. i'm curious what different types of flashbacks may look like. are people usually conscious during flashbacks? i've never been around someone who suffers from flashbacks

Just a curiosity, how do you dream? And did u ever try lucid dreaming in order to do something about your situation? It's just very interesting to see something like lucid dream on a person with multiple personalities in the same body.

Does anyone know how better to differentiate between a panic attack and an emotional flashback. Sometimes we can’t even tell what’s going on emotionally and it’s hard to decipher after.

I work in healthcare in diagnostic imagine and on occasion have people experience panic attacks. We only know medical information that is pertinent to the exam, so we usually dont know what their mental health struggles are or if they have dementia, etc. Would you approach these types of breakdowns similarly? I wish we learned more about patient care and mental health in general, so I'm very grateful to have found your channel! You're helping so many people.

hi this is very good and similar helping someone who has a seizure disorder like living with flashback someone who has a seizure disorder has been through seizures before the last thing any one with a seizure disorder wants is someone panicking the person with a seizure disorder also may not be verbal or unaware of their actions as is the case in focal epilepsy or even absence epilepsy and to wait an comfort the person as they come out of the seizure.
