Everyone is different. The best advice is to be flexible and creative. Trial and error will show you what works, and doesn’t work, with a particular individual.

Great @Carolynn, Teepa has taught us well to see it from the other person's perspective, dementia doesn't change the fact that we are all human and just want to be heard!

Yes, please, PLEASE, do a video on delusions. Especially, with a thought/question loop. Thank you.

Colleen thank you for the suggestion. Here are just a couple resources you can find at teepasnow.com that might help: a recent blog (teepasnow.com/blog/do-you-see-what-i-see-hallucinations-and-delusions-in-dementia/) or a masterclass being held on Oct. 19th (teepasnow.com/event/master-class-behavioral-symptoms-of-dementia-hallucinations-and-delusions/)

My mother suffers from hallucinations due to Alzheimer's. She always imagines that there is someone trying to steal from her or harm me. I try to reassure her and change the subject as much as I can, but she insists that someone is there. The situation has become frightening, and there seems to be no solution in this case other than forcing her to sleep to get rid of these delusions. Caring for her at this stage has become difficult, and I feel sad for her, not knowing what to do.

Just some feedback, I think it would have been helpful to have a more cohesive introduction at the beginning of this video, much like the article on the website that led me here. I want to share this video with family members who are not at all familiar with this stuff, so framing the conversation with a solid introduction to the topic would have been good. Otherwise it is a little confusing.

@Michael, that is a tough one for sure, but not too uncommon! There are some great strategies for how to respond, not react, when we are surprised with these differences in reality. First thing to do is respond with a reflection/validation - "Oh, so you are seeing someone in here with me?" That will get them both on the same page, then work on getting her to get up and move away from the source of the vision. "Let's head to the living room to see if we can figure out what is going on!" Validating his reality is key, but not jumping into it with him, or discounting it either. teepasnow.com/?s=Hallucination Or reach out to one of our PAC Consultants for a free 30 minute session to talk it out and try some PAC Skills: teepasnow.com/services/consulting/
