I get a lot of owners asking me how they can teach their horses to stand better for their farriers and hoof care providers. Most people think the answer is more time spent teaching a horse to pick up and hold up their hooves. Over the years I found this is only one part of teaching a horse how to stand well. If the other parts involved in training this skill set aren't working well then it doesn't matter how much you focus on the horse picking up and holding up its hooves they will not improve very much.
The biggest issue I see is that many horses are holding onto a low or high level of anxiety that they don't know how to let go of. So if they are always operating on the edge of an emotional tipping point asking them to do something vulnerable like give them one of their legs for any length of time becomes quite difficult for them. The key to success in this case then is to recognize when the horse is anxious and then help the horse let go of some of that anxiety.
In this video I show one exercise that I do with all my horses. It helps me gauge how anxious they are and also helps them let go of that anxiety. It has nothing to do with picking up a horses hooves and everything to do with it at the same time.
If you are listening with headphones the audio will only play on the right side. I apologize for this, I didn't know that my microphone was accidentally set to stereo instead of mono. Super frustrating but the I really liked the content I captured and thought it would be better to share it instead of trying to redo it.
As always feel free to leave me any comments or questions. I read and do my best to respond to all of them!
