Great tutorial! I've practiced this philosophy for many years. I tell others, as Julius Boros used to say, "Swing Easy, Hit Hard". In addition to this, I use a 48" length driver (maximum allowable) to gain additional clubhead speed. It doesn't take long to adapt to the longer driver, but once you do, you'll be very pleased. I'm pushing 81 years of age, now drive 225 yards fairly consistently, and am working to 250. I will get there. Once again, great lesson!!!
@paulwilsongolf

Very good. Not sure about the 48" driver. You can swing club that are too long which actually loses you yardage. I would check that. At 81 you are doing great because most golfers I see at that age are nowhere near that. Keep up the good work.

Paul, you are a gifted teacher. I coached baseball for many years and hitting was my expertise. Your first comment was exactly the same thing I told my kids. "Releasing" the club at impact only happens with loose wrists. One kid told me he felt like he was 'slapping' at the ball. He was right. And as much as I knew all of this I still locked my wrists. This video was a 'doh' moment for me. Thank you

Thanks for the kind words. I truly appreciate it. Yes, loose wrists = home run. Tight wrists = bunt. Slapping is a good term. My students say it snaps. So I use this to describe it to all students. Simple thought and feeling. Glad you see it and will be doing it. If so, you will be able to pop 250+ yard home runs right down the fairway.

I went into my history to find this video just so I could come back and say thanks. Watched this last night, bought a bucket of balls at the range after work today and BOOM! This works. I golfed 9 holes yesterday and my best drive was 188. Today at the range the ball was still in the air past the 200 yd marker, many of the shots had the right arc for a lot of roll out, too. I was hitting to the right on and off and caught myself with a bit of the “chicken wing” and upon correcting that, was smashing them pretty straight, too! I assumed I was just not strong enough to hit a drive over 200, but I just needed to loosen up and take it easy instead of trying to kill it. Thank you!

My brother started doing this after playing with a student from bear’s best. He bought the swing speed monitor and for years has been the longest at his club in NV. I then bought the swing machine system and enjoyed effortless golf with playing the fade at 58 years old. I send these videos to my buddies who don’t believe the distance off the tee in the GPS golf carts when they read less than 200 yards. Ez swings with loose wrists is the key to better golf as we grow old. It’s fun to measure off the distance with the cart GPS on hits that they feel were good and they don’t even get to 195. They will never learn.

Paul Wilson, Thanks for your reply. So I went to the range and tried throwing my driver (so to say) thru the ball . Took a few balls to find the right timing to roll my wrists thru impact. Once that was done, oh yes! My ball normally falls about 5 to 10 yards short of 205 flag. Suddenly I was about 20 feet above that flag, so I am guessing I added about 20+ yards to my carry distance. I tried adding mor oomph with my body but that had negative results and I lost distance and accuracy. I’ll watch more of your videos to get your thoughts on that. Meanwhile I’m thrilled with a more relaxed swing and my gain in yardage. I am a 76 year old rookie (2 years) and value your contribution to my quest for stardom - er, make that a better game. Thanks again!

Hi Paul. Having great success with the swing. Taking it back in a certain way and checking positions in the back swing was all a waste of time for me. I'm having great success just cranking my shoulders around my spine angle letting the arms and hands go wherever they want then turning through hips then shoulders keeping the spine angle slightly tilted back. Hitting my irons flush and gained over 20 metres on my driver now carrying over 260m👍 Oh and I need to make sure I straighten the left leg coming through or I can hook it. That's how simple the swing is for me now👍😊

Loose wrists that allow for lag via the wrist hinge enable greater potential energy. The takeaway torque generation (corkscrew rotational momentum - turning force - hips to shoulders) is met with a moment of lag which leads into a sharp reversal of rotational force which exponentially unloads the potential energy, converting it into kinetic energy. Swinging with the arms severely nullifies this capability. Interesting. Paul your videos have helped to conceptually UNDERSTAND the technical observational nature of golf. Many golf instructors obfuscate these details, which to me, are a sigh of release... making the golf epiphany (the DUH / OF COURSE moment) easier to ascertain. So many things came together for me today on the course. Thank you.

Hi Paul; I have a simple driver drill that I began using that has really helped me with the proper swing. I'm not sure if you may have done a video with this or something similar but all it amounts to is practicing the driver swing on a slight uphill slope. It forces you to swing up & from a shallow downswing to prevent being steep & coming over the top. If there's a tee box that's sloped it's a perfect practice swing before you hit your driver.

I was averaging 250 by using the tips from your “How to hit driver long and straight video”. If I try to hit longer I tense up and pull or pull hook the ball.
@paulwilsongolf
4 жыл бұрын
So stick to 250 for a while longer. Confidence breeds distance. So if you keep hitting it 250 all the time you will be able to put a little more legs and hips into it. Right now when you increase you are going all out. Your release is not timed for that fast a body move so if you speed up slowly you keep timing and slowly increase distance.

I'm still loving your videos Paul. Started working on your swing again a few weeks ago and I'm seeing distance improvements. My old arm swing was 240-270 driver carry, but inconsistent. I've always been longer than guys I play with. Last week my hip/leg swing was 230-240 carry driver, 140-150 carry 7 iron so I need to keep working on the hip speed. Pulling the left butt cheek back at transition does seem to boost speed. Your swing definitely hits the ball straighter. Almost crazy straight with a neutral grip.
@paulwilsongolf
4 жыл бұрын
Yes, crazy straight. Wait until you are just as long as before and crazy straight. That's when it's really fun. If you are feeling confident just add a little more legs and hips. There is timing involved so you fire too hard you will blow it right so slow back down. Before going all out all you have to do it hook 10 in a row. This speeds up the timing of the release. Then you can fire the lower super hard until you hit it straight. Try it or try slowly adding body. The choice is yours.

I have been watching several of your videos, regarding the grip, the loose wrists, head movement, and lag to name a few. I can report that what I have taken from your videos has really helped me improve my iron and fairway wood striking. I'm seeing 15 to 20 yards difference between my old hacking stab at the ball and this smooth as silk swing you are trying to teach me. BUT, I'm still not seeing a significant improvement off the tee with driver. The lag part from the top of the backswing still eludes me. I have a lot of work to do, and I am encouraged by the improvement I have seen, especially with long irons. Pretty sure my driver problem is mostly in my head, and it is centered on the movement of my hips from the 45 degree full cocked position to square to the ball at impact when I try to use lag on the longest club in the bag. LOL. "Help me, Obi Wan Kenobi..."
@paulwilsongolf
4 жыл бұрын
You are starting to get it which is good. Driver is tricky for most people. Keep in mind people want to hit and hit hard. Why not swing it at 50% and actually make the change. In your case it is releasing it from a lagged position. At 50% you have double the time. I would also be trying to roll it from the top and hook it. Once you get that you add body to straighten it out. So forget lag with driver for now. Go way slower and actually do it. I would roll it too to get the release working. If you do it slowly YOU"RE DOING IT. So slowly speed up only the lower body for more distance. Everyone wants it all right away. Sometimes you gotta take in stages. You can do it!

Paul. Love your tips. Exactly what the pro instructed me to do, and it worked, about 10 years ago, and then I took hiatus from golf and I’m struggling to get that loose-wrist feeling, coupled with the compete hip turn. But my question today is, when I allow my arms to extend further out to get a wider arc, does that mean that I need to be gradually teeing the ball up a bit further away from my feet? How do I find the sweet spot of correct teeing distance for that wider arc? Thank you, - mark8
@paulwilsongolf
3 жыл бұрын
Glad you are back into golf and glad you found me. You only have one widest arc. So extend your arms at set up (don't go crazy and reach too far).
