I get lots of questions about hitching a horse or pony to a vehicle. It's the same whether you are hitching a horse or a pony, when using a breast collar, single style harness and hitching to an easy entry vehicle. Things change and get more complicated when hitching a team to a wagon or marathon vehicle. This video is for a single, hitched to an easy entry style cart (or any single tree style single vehicle).
The order in which you hitch is very important, for safety reasons. The practice of hitching a tied horse or pony is one that has many different opinions. I practice hitching without tying and hitching while the animal is tied. I like my ponies to be able to do it either way, that way I can observe the rules of safety at any venue I may be at.
The order of hitching:
#1 - Attach the traces to the vehicle.
#2 - Do up your breeching/hold back straps.
#3 - Do up your over girth.
The order of unhitching:
#1 - Undo the over girth
#2 - Undo the hold back straps
#3 - Undo the traces
**Something to keep in mind is to NEVER attach a vehicle to a horse or pony that does NOT have a bridle on. Removing the halter, to bridle the animal, with the vehicle attached is a set up for disaster. Anyone who has been witness to a loose animal, without a bridle or halter on, seeing the vehicle "chase" it, running in absolute terror and fear is something one never forgets. I think people only make that mistake once. Usually that horse or pony doesn't drive again.
