I’ve done this method before, but I was too restrained in how far apart I spread the slashed pieces, and the resulting sleeves are in an awkward middle ground. The tip to line up the edges along the same horizontal line is great!

Brilliant video - I’m adjusting a vintage pattern to fit me. It has a flutter sleeve, being a bit conservative I feared the sleeve may be too full and was looking for a video on how to reduce fullness. Having watched your video I now understand why the sleeve patten piece is the shape it is, and seeing you in your lovely flutter sleeve dress has convinced me to sample the sleeve as it is before taking out any fullness. Thank you

Great tutorial! I love altering sleeves, it's the easiest way to get a different look on a TNT pattern.

I like the subtlety of using the stitching line as your cut to line (I've done it just going to the top of the pattern piece). Agree that a lot of patterns assume women have stick-thin arms, without shapely muscles!

I've always admired your flutter sleeves, so I'm really grateful that you've created this tutorial 🙏 I've tried other methods without achieving what I was aiming for, but hopefully now I'll get them spot on! 🤞😁

I'm assuming that the reverse is also true? I have a large flutter sleeve that I'd like to try to make much less full. I'm assuming I can slash and overlap to make it a skinnier fit?

Possibly. I don't see why it wouldn't work (unless there is loads of gathering added to the sleeve cap) definitely worth a try at least :)

What sort of hem do you do on your flutter sleeve? Thanks - love your videos.

For this one I did a narrow rolled hem, I have also used a narrow bias binding in the past :)

Thanks so much I haven’t sewn in so long but my hubby bought a new sewing machine as a surprise for my birthday. I love this video I was trying to change a sleeve on a bought shirt to a flutter sleeve. Your video is so easy to follow and fun to watch just what I needed!! Thanks

Can you do a mini tutorial on putting the sleeves together- I'm having a hard time making the hem look smooth *especially* around the underarm seam.

So how do we sew this pattern?

Sew up the underarm seam, finish the hem and I would French seam the armhole because that's the finish I prefer :)

I plan to try this. Thank you! Question: Do you somehow mark the front and back notches that were on the original pattern? Or, does it matter for the sleeve insertion?

At 6.28 I talk about putting the notches on your new pattern piece 😊
