Hi - I am hoping to french seam a dress with in seam side pockets just like this - but the pattern for the dress is one piece for the front and one for the back. Its the Bella dress by Tessuti. That will work, won't it? I am using a linen silk blend fabric. Or I could bias bind all the side seams. I wonder what you think? I have only done french seams on tops or skirts before, never a dress. Thank you for such a wonderful video, your instructions are amazing.

Excellent Tutorial! You really made this easy to understand. I really prefer the shorter technique tutorial videos over a long sew along since each techniques can be used over and over again with different garments; by having them labeled by technique instead of garment/pattern number, it will make them so much easier to find. I am assuming this is for patterns with 5/8" seam allowances. Hope you are enjoying your holiday and having a wonderful time!!!

Am having to watch this more than once, lovely and clear video, pointer helps too, and thank goodness no distracting muzac., Looking forward to getting my pocket into an existing french seamed dress by the end of today, and now see I have to unpick more of the side seams than I already have. Would never have understood all this without your video, thanks very much. The only bit I'm really confused about, is why the extra inch of sewing each end, after I thought you'd finished? Update a few hours later, have now finished one pocket which has turned out pretty successful, and decided to leave the dress with just one pocket as found it harder putting it into a dress that already exists, and I think my success was partly luck, so am not wanting to risk spoiling the other side!

So that’s how you inset a pocket into a seam so it doesn’t look like a Georgia O’Keefe painting! I had tried solving it by top stitching the pocket lining to the outside. It was a giant pain in the arse to do at that stage and didn’t really solve the issue. @ Costuming Drama for sending me here.

Loved the video, a French seam would be essential if you didn't have a serger, that's not me. By using an old picture you can't tell that I just turned 84 a couple of weeks ago, but I still enjoy learning new techniques. Your teaching and camera work is well done and I like the use of that blue "pointer"although that bed in the background sorta' threw me off a bit in the beginning. Thanks for not offering music, who needs it? Also, thanks for not going into a long dissertation of crap we don't care about. Good video and right to the point. By the way, where is Northamptonshire? I'm right outside of Atlanta, Ga. y'all. giggles and I'll be back again!

I am making V9253 and thanks to you my insides are looking as good as my outsides so far and I don’t want to ruin it with the zip insertion. Could you please tell me how you finish the back seam edges with a zip insertion? Suspect that you do a Hong Kong finish with bias but not sure. If this is the case, I would love it if you could tell me the order in which you do it please. I am drafting a facing for the bodice AND raising the V. Love your channel Siân. You are the best at tutorials.

Thank you, I'm glad you're finding these helpful 😊 I finish the back seam edges with bias binding, I sew the binding on first then interface the area the zip is going to go in to with a thin strip of lightweight interfacing then sew in the zip then finish the back seam to the hem, and then I sew in the facing. Hope that helps 😊

you have just saved me a ridiculous amount of math and origami, i couldn't thank you enough! so straightforward, no fluff and very clear! if you haven't already, you should make a playlist of all your 'how-to' videos. just to check since I am more used to metric - when cutting out the pieces you are adding at least 3/8" seam allowance to the skirt side seams; 3/8" to the long section of the pocket bag piece; and... 3/8" for the opening section of your pocket piece? or is it 1/2" allowance on all seams? i often sew my seams straight at 1/8" and draft my own patterns, so i'm trying to see how little seam allowance i can get away with when i'm short on fabric 😉
