My best advice is to get your rifle suppressed. It saves putting earplugs in and if you should happen to miss your shot,they always run towards you. You don't need a magnum rifle to shoot deer or in fact any NZ species.I use a suppressed 25-06 and its a flat shooting laser for the mountains.

Thoroughly enjoyed the video! I’ve been living in NZ for 4 years and still haven’t hunted the lands. But I’m finally gearing up to go hunting. Just a question with regards to the kill once it’s been butchered. If you’re out in the bush, is it acceptable to leave the carcass where you shot and butchered the animal? Or how does it work in NZ? Cheers!
@southislandriflewalkers5545
Жыл бұрын
Hey mate, glad you enjoyed it! Generally the animals we harvest are a long way from any tracks, huts or popular spots so we're not too worried about leaving them where they lay. Whenever we shoot an animal on a riverbed we will drag the carcass up into the bush/off the riverbed in case it rains/floods- nice to keep it away from any water 👌

As soon as we get the meat off the carcass we put the meat somewhere to cool. Once its cooled off chuck it in an old pillow case and try keep it in shady places when it's not in your pack on the move. It should stay good for long enough to get it home and in the chiller/freezer even in mid summer, it definitely gets a bit harder in the heat though. If we're going after meat in summer conditions we try shoot an animal as late in the trip as possible, you should get a couple of days before it'll start to green up!
