Well done. I spent a good amount of time researching and documenting the facets of my '51 Tula when I picked it up a decade ago. The journey was fascinating. Prob the most interesting thing is the hand-etched arrow and fletching inside the star. I believe this to suggest an early example of a '51. Somewhere in the '51 production it was changed to machine stamping. As you know there are many indicators of origination, production, etc for these rifles. It's all super cool.

Great question! Generally rebarreling was not a standard part of the Soviet refurb process. A 1951 Soviet refurb could be chrome lined or non-chrome lined, and in lieu of a visual identification, it would take a chemical identification.

Hey brother , I’m a pretty big fan of the Yugo SKS and I just inherited one from my father, I was wondering if you could help me identify it a little more precisely??? As far as I can tell it’s in really really great condition but the numbers are what I can’t quite figure out. It has a lot of electro pencil numbers on it so my guess is that it possibly went through a refurb. ?? Just wondering if you can help me out. I can send close up pics . I think it’s a 1972 59/66 A1 but there are so many different numbers in it that I’m not sure. I got it completely caked in cosmoline and I cleaned the shit out of it and that’s when I started noticing the different numbers everywhere. Thanks in advance if you can help

for dating the rifle you'll need to look at the letter prefix and serial number, and for denoting which variant, you'll have to look at which features it has: rifle grenade launcher w/ flip up leaf sights (59/66), and flip up night sights in either phosphorus paint or a tritium vial (59/66A1). that said, basically every rifle made after febuary of 1967 will atleast be the 59/66 variant with the nade launcher, and may or may not have the night sights that would make an A1. the serial appears on several parts, most prominantly on the reciever and stock, some parts will not have the prefix, the letter prefix will tell ya the year, starting with "A" for 1967 and ending with "Z" in 1986, then restarting with "A" again in 1987 through "C" in 1989; 1972 would be "I" prefix. the other markings will either be inspection marks or part numbers, tho some will be from importers.

Is $1000CAD for a 1953 3 digit serial numbered izzy sks worth it? Numbers matching
@Triangle26
11 ай бұрын
I don’t know the Canadian market well enough to say for certain - but I think the short answer is yes. 1953 Izzy’s are one of the most desirable Soviet SKS variants. They are considerably more rare than 1954 Izzy’s, and infinitely more rare than run-of-the-mill Tulas. With the way the Soviet’s serialized their guns, 3-digit serial numbers don’t necessarily command any premium. The only other thing to be aware of is refurbishment status. The more refurbing that has been done, the less it is worth. That said - the cheapest ‘53 Izzy in the US still generally costs about $2000 CAD, so I would assume that 1K is a pretty good deal. If I had that opportunity, I would jump on it in a heartbeat.

@@Triangle26 thanks for your reply. Very insightful. I just noticed that the stock is missing the manufacturing stamp. What could that possibly mean? Not original stock? It does have the same serial number as the other parts.

So what's the purpose to chrome the bore after all?
@Triangle26
Жыл бұрын
The primary purpose is erosion resistance. Chrome handles heat and pressure better than steel, so it effectively just lasts longer. This is especially true with military weapons that may get super hot due to sustained rapid fire. Corrosion resistance and simplified cleaning are added secondary benefits!

Thank you for posting this video. I was certain my (Chinese Arsenal 26, 8th year of production, which dates this SKS to 1963) bore wasnt chrome lined... and all the "internet experts said it was". Ive cleaned the bore many times (the rifle is in good condition and not abused) and it still doesnt to appear to me to be chromed. Id love to have you ( or Misha) inspect my bore and verify. I would be pleasantly surprised if it was chromed. Ive actaully got some Oxpho-blue, Ill have to give that a try...

@@Triangle26 As far as the commercial examples it would make sense to find one with a spare Russian barrel etc because they were trying to pump out as many as they could to fill existing orders before the ban took effect. Another component to the 'is or is not ' might be that if the MILSPEC production requirement mandates "shall be chrome lined", coupled with the understanding on how the 'People's Factory (insert numbers here)' go about their daily business; skipping a step in the manufacturing process would be "essentially" impossible. "No noodles today for you, comrade!" Edit: Specifically directed towards the Chinese Type 56. Russkies and others are well documented slackers in armaments production! 😅
@Triangle26
Жыл бұрын
I couldn't agree more - that's the reality of mass production. It's the same reason why Chinese "commercial" rifles are so good. It's not because the Chinese were insistent on selling Americans high quality products, but simply because the cheapest and easiest way to make those rifles was to utilize the well established military production infrastructure. It's very easy to continue with business as usual, and it's very hard to "change the recipe". Its the same reason that "raw" sunflower seeds cost more than roasted and salted sunflower seeds at the grocery store!

I have a triangle 26 made in 1967 and it has a stainless steel bore. I know because it looks just like my other stainless steel barreled rifles' bores. ha ha ah ha ha JK The fact that my old SKS's bore looks like new is because of the chroming. I am sure that for the most of it's life and use, it was digesting corrosively primed ammo which would most likely pitted a non-chromed bore that I doubt was cleaned quickly after each firing session....
