Again, love these tree videos!!!! I lived in n. New Jersey for 8 years (born in S. Cal and live in S. Cal now), and Norway Spruce was one of the most commonly planted conifer there in the Garden State. It slightly reminds me of nw Cal/sw Oregon native Brewer Spruce (Picea breweriana) with its pendulous branchlets. Brewer Spruce, however, has even more a weeping habit!

This is perfect; very helpful. Last fall an arborist told me I had a Sitka spruce, which was planted way too close to the house to grow to full size (we're in Oregon). But the cones just didn't look right. Your video has helped me - for sure, I have a Norway spruce, and it's about full size already. Thank you for an excellent guide. : )

This I.D. was by request. Typically I stick with native species, but Norway spruce are all over the place not hurting anyone-by my humble opinion.

@@MartyCalabrese they are and attract so much wildlife I couldn't imagine living here without them. Every night we have great horned owls come in ... it's the best! Thank you again for helping me identify them.

Italian here. We have whole forests of these in the Alps, super common. The ones in Val di Fiemme and in the Panaveggio forest are used to make violins since Stradivari times. In harvesting, which is tightly restricted and monitored, the ones selected for musical instruments are marked as R/P = Risonanza Panaveggio. Unfortunately a huge storm called "Vaia", really a rare event maybe climate change-related, destroyed considerable parts of those forests in October 2018. They tend not to have very deep roots, and storm winds were channeling in the valleys "bouncing" from one edge of the valley to the other. It'll take over 100 years for those forest areas to grow back as before. Larches are the first trees growing back and being planted as they typically "start a forest" before spruces. Spruces are called "pecci" but we also call them inappropriately "abete rosso" = red fir, to distinguish them from "abete bianco" = white fir (Abies alba), but we know they are actually not firs.

Hmm.. i keep seeing similar conifers near me but all the branches have a curve with the tips pointing upward and the leaves sagging down. the bottom branches of one i saw today all sagged right down on the ground and had cones pointing down about golf ball size.

How fast do they grow?

FAST. Norway spruce grow over a foot per year under good growing conditions! However, growth rate can vary depending on factors such as soil quality, temp, moisture, and nutrients. Growth rate tends to slow, as the tree reaches maturity fyi.
