Adorable parakeet! We had one for 11 years. He was smarter than most people I know and he also loved stones. LOL. I discovered different pellets for birds after he passed which is sad as if I could've gotten him to eat them he'd have lived 2 times longer. We only found one brand and he hated it, though. Random but yeah.

I've found black, brittle, shiny rocks on a river bed. Every year the water is turned off at Elephant Butte, New Mexico. This causes the Rio Grande to go bone dry for the winter in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I love to walk on the river bed with my dogs. I've found these rocks I've described. However, none of the other black stones come close to the unique beauty of a real black tourmaline even with its wrinkles, cracks etc.

Hey! This is super informative and interesting! I love black stones and I have one that I'm having trouble identifying. It's a small faceted obelisk shaped pendant, it's fairly opaque but has some faint transluscent bands upon a closer look (which become more visible under a light). It's got a few nicks, which appear reddish. I don't dare scratch it with a quartz just yet, though I did get it for cheap. Any ideas?

@YeOldeRockShop

Not all obsidian is transparent. Rainbow, gold sheen and snowflake obsidian are all opaque. As for man made vs natural, there really is no easy way. For the most part regular black obsidian is fairly common and it is not worth faking.

@@luluvaldez2536 That is strange as most metals are softer than obsidian. If you have a piece of glass lying around that you do not mind having a scratch on try using the same earring on it. If the earring scratches the new piece of glass then we know the earring is harder than glass and will scratch obsidian. If it does not scratch the new piece of glass then you may not have obsidian.

@YeOldeRockShop
3 жыл бұрын
Black tourmaline it not normally faked as there is quite a lot of it and it is fairly inexpensive. When we talk about the stones hardness it is more about how easy it is to scratch rather then how hard it is to break. Due to how Black tourmaline grows you can get pieces that are fairly fragile when dropped or when pressure is applied, but will still scratch glass. If you would like to email a picture to info@jacobstrading.ca I can take a look at it for you.
