I'd just recently moved from Birmingham to Cambridge, and one morning, out on a stroll, I heard what I thought was a peculiar wood pigeon call. Spent a good while trying to learn about bird calls, a subject I'm not too familiar with, and found this video, excellent stuff! Maybe Collared Dove's weren't very common where I lived before, but I can now certainly say that there's a bunch in the park near my house, and here I thought the pigeons in Cambridge might just be musically shy! Turns out I was listening to a different bird entirely! Anyway, love the explanation of the difference in rhythm, thanks so much for the video, really helpful stuff!

I can impersonate a Wood Pigeons call very accurate by inhaling while i do the sound. It is such fun when they answer back!

My friends were in the pub explaining that some stupid bird was waking her up every morning at 5am so I explained which birds they are using these techniques, and they all thought it was the funniest thing ever. Now our WhatsApp group is full of voice notes of friends trying to get the wood pigeon-pigeon and Collard Dove calls correct. Makes getting woke up by these things every morning a little less annoying. Thank you.

I've heard a few mnemonics for these two but I think yours are more memorable! I think this will be the first year that I can really distinguish them. It's not as difficult as I always thought it was.

I always say that wood pigeons sound similar to collared doves except they're smokers lol! They have this raucous sound while collared doves have a purer tone if that makes sense.
