What I found was that my slotting in upper registers was resolved after investing in a better horn. I don’t think trumpet instructors emphasize to students how quality of a horn contributes to better playing. I always thought that trumpet is a hard instrument and I needed to struggle for years to improve these issues. But when I went to a horn shop and had an option to play 8 different professional horns, I made a revolutionary discovery that my student quality mass produced brass band horn was my limitation compared to the $3,000 horns I tried. I could not believe my ears and my lips how I could slot and hit high register notes with less effort, less fatigue and more consistency. I’m not saying you need to Monette to play well or that it can replace regular exercises but don’t expect to master a trumpet with your brass band model Yamaha.

Yes, this is true. Equipment does matter. After all, it’s physics! Every little change in equipment matters. Metal type, weight, size, taper, bore. There are so many possibilities and options and it all matters. It all makes a difference.

Hi Chris. Great video/tips. I often times have a problem when I come back down to G, but have had the issue with A as well. But for me, it is the A & G within the staff (still tough for me to go past G above the staff unless I am slurring and with rested chops). Thanks for sharing the exercises.

@@ChrisDavisTrumpet Hi Chris. A new job I started has seriously cut into my practice time, but I feel as if I am making some progress. I have been working on breathing and note accuracy during warm ups. Still my biggest struggle is endurance. My chops just get tired and the higher notes become a real challenge. Thanks for asking. Still listening to your CD a lot btw.

I'd say to change your focus away from what you can't do. Pay attention to your mechanics in the mid and lower register. That will tell you how you may need to adjust. There are usually subtle tells well before you get to the high register. So, my advice is this . . . don't rush your routine and take your daily routine seriously. Those notes will come when you're diligent in your practice in all areas (not only the upper register). Of course, I say all this without ever hearing you play so. . . do with this information what you will.
