I know this video was published a couple years ago, but I would like to add that it is important for the accent to really stick and to feel like second nature in order to sound good. You don't only want to sound good when you're concentrating, but also when you're distracted, annoyed or whatever. I know this may sound obvious to some and applies to virtually any skill, but sometimes it's good to know what you're really aiming for.

That's a really good distinction you make between analyzing a language and paying close attention. Also, finding someone who can sensitively point out a few mistakes (not all of them). Another thing I agree with is not to concentrate on single sound pronunciation but on what I call meta-pronunciation. What I'm really grateful to learn from you here is the concept of a different resting position for each language. I've never heard of this idea but it makes immediate sense. Ties in to what you suggest about role-modeling. Dank je well, arigato, thanks.

imitation and talking to myself are what helped me the most, so i definitely agree with you there. but i would say that when learning new sounds it will almost always feel weird, uncomfortable, and awkward at first. i'd say it's not so much that it feels good so much as it just feels right. that's more pronunciation than accent though.

+Dyldro Hello. Thank you for the comment. By 'accent' I meant 'you have a good accent' type of an accent, which is something that covers pronunciation, intonation, accent, stress patterns etc. In my case, it really feels 'good' as opposed to 'right', because I don't know what 'right' is when I'm just a learner. But like I said, this is only my personal opinion based on my own experience.

Another good video. You have given me a few ideas that I want to try. I appreciate what you say about Russian - my main second language. When I was still learning Russian, I would stand in the subway station and subvocalize all of the stations on the route marked on the wall. I also found that after speaking Russian a lot, my tongue felt like it was all balled up in the upper front of my mouth. I would add a couple of things. Pronunciation is retraining muscles as well as hearing accurately what you are supposed to say. So I really did a lot of subvocalizing. I also listened to how Russians spoke English. Their mistakes gave me help in spotting where my mistakes were in Russian.

As you've pointed out, listening does help and if you are worried about time, do it while working, working out, eating, before going to bed, commuting, etc. I do talk a lot to myself while paying attention of certain things. Another thing that is very helpful is to use typical speech therapy exercises, such as talking with a pen on your mouth, with plossive sounds putting a piece of paper near you. it is awesome, to watch a video like this. I will share a story with you, and with the other readers of the comment :D so I was working in a hotel, as a receptionist, and it was a night when the hotel was full. there was a journalist who came from Northern Ireland, and he was talking to me. I gave him a couple of beers and after that I had to listen very carefully because of his accent, so I listened and he noticed it. He asked me if I understand everything, and I was like, yeah sure, but I really have to pay attention. after that he said: do not bother mate, sometimes even I do not understand myself. :D I was laughing. there was another guest in the hotel, who was hanging with this guy, and he asked me how is it possible that I have much better accent then this guys dialect :D and I told him, this is because of Eminem :D and the guy from Northern Ireland asked then: why? because you eat so much M&M's? :D me and the other guest were laughing :D it was a funny night.

I have this question for you, I'm very interested in Japanese, in one of your videos I heard your Japanese accent, it was almost perfect, but what I liked most is your intonation. I'll be very thankful if you could make a video about this topic (Japanese accent & intonation). I said if you just can do it of course, otherwise don't bother. thank you anyway.

Hello Khalid. Thank you for the comment. It's funny that you mention my Japanese accent, because I don't think it's very good. I've been only learning Japanese for about 5 months and apart from the fact, that a friend had to help me prepare for the Japanese part when it comes to wording and grammar, I personally thought my pronunciation was just so-so too, because I didn't have enough exposure to the Japanese language and just tried my best at imitating the 'flow'. So.. I don't know if I could be of any help in explaining how I did it. If it helps, it's like imitating a foreigner speak your native language, or something like that.

Hey, nice video! :) I've also got 2 other questions in mind, I'd love you to talk about. First, what do you think of the affect your age has on your ability to learn languages? From what age does it get really hard if you want to get fluent, and do you yourself see a difference in your learning comparing a language you learned ultimatly and one you learn at around 18? And second it would be nice to get a lot of tips about upkeeping the langauges you already can. I think the biggest challenge is not to learn a lot of languages one after another but to upkeep the ones you already speak. Thats the problen i am facing, I'm speaking 5 languages and look forward to learn like 3 more but since my studies and hobbies take a lot of time I worry about loosing my fluency in the recent learned languages.
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial
8 жыл бұрын
+xXSecritXx Hello. Thanks for the comment. I think the main difference in my case was learning languages before the age of about 13 and after that. Before I was 13 I learned languages very quickly and I remembered almost everything after just hearing it once. After that my progress wasn't that fast. Another change came when I was about 27, because I started loosing interest in language learning and of course, when you're not interested in something, you learn slower. As far as up-keeping languages, it's a bit too complex to answer in one comment, but it is a nice topic for a video, so I will try to make one.

Can I ask what are you already doing to keep your progress you have done in learning? It is always good to ask, we never know what a helpful idea might bring an answer by an accident :). The best thing happened to me which is constantly helping me in keeping my English progress was that I made friends with English people and we chat very often. Nothing like reading books or watching films has been never a such perfectly working way.

You know, Vladimir, some conditions are bringing to my mind an idea that natives of given languages would help with subtitles for free if you place a video in the Internet with such request (I dont know however how works addition of subtittles after the film is posted). I mean, I could help with Polish and you would do just a correction if you found something crapped up) and I'm sure some users of other languages would gladly help with theirs. But I'm not pushing you. That was just a small concept :)

I'm currently only learning Slovak but over the summer am going to be learning Russian full time aswell. Do you think they could overlap a bit?
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial

+Dan Simons Hi Dan. I think that a lot of people agree that learning any two languages at the same time is not a good idea. Learning two closely related languages like Slovak and Russian at the same time is not a good idea either. Learning one to a decent level and then starting the other is much more efficient. With two closely related languages you will also heavily confuse them and waste a lot of time and energy separating the two in your mind.

Your English is quite good. As a native English speaker, I only noticed two indications you aren't American. You sometimes pronounce a D sound instead of a Th. While in some cases we do use the D sound in place of T, I noticed your The often turns into a Duh. The other would be your pronunciation has a slight glottal origin. Overall I'm impressed!!
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial
6 жыл бұрын
You said, my English is quite good? What is good then? :) Thank you for the nice comment, but I think it's a bit unfair to write something like that. If you were to speak my native language the way I speak English, people would be left with their mouths open, because there are relatively few foreigners speaking Slovak, but since it's English, I guess the standards are much higher. But regardless, I think you might be mistaken in your analysis. I'm not saying my English is perfect, but I spent a considerable part of my childhood in the US and at one point spoke English better than I speak my native Slovak language. The way I speak is the way people speak in North New Jersey where I lived and not necessarily what you perceive as erroneous pronunciation. If you met me in New York City and I told you my name was Peter Sanders and I lived in Paramus, NJ, we could talk for hours and you would not notice any D's or glottalization. I make a lot of other mistakes, but these are mistakes that native speakers make frequently too, mostly because I never went to schools in the US (simplification of grammar tenses, poor written English etc.). The D's by the way come from listening to too much hip hop music and are also quite normal in Northern NJ. Again, my English is not perfect, it's been a while since I've been in the States and I do make mistakes, but to say it's only 'quite good' when I've been passing for a native speaker for most of my life doesn't make me happy:)
@sonnydenis

@@VladimirSkultetyOfficial My comment was not in anyway negative! Saying something is quite good is often stronger than saying something is very good. I even said I was impressed. I was giving feedback not criticizing. As for the pronunciation, you have said in your videos more than once that the key to improving your accent is remaining humble and accepting feedback. Therefore, attacking me for giving constructive feedback seems unnecessary. When you use KZitem as a platform to market yourself you are also leaving yourself open to comments.
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial

My bad my bad:) To be honest, I was under the impression, that you were attacking me and I was only reacting, but it's very easy to be misunderstood on the internet, so I'm sorry if it was the case. Thank you for not reacting more aggressively to my comment. What I however dare to disagree with is the part about constructive criticism. Constructive criticism in my opinion is something that correctly addresses a problem and provides specific steps to a successful solution of the problem. I don't think this was the case since, as I mentioned, even if there might be a number of things wrong with my English, what you addressed was just Northern New Jersey in me. I think my main issue here is, that what one sees as constructive criticism, others may perceive as unsolicited faulty advice. I highly praise and am very thankful for constructive criticism, but find unsolicited faulty advice a bit annoying.

Hello, Vladimir Sorry for off-topic and maybe an inappropriate question: what do you do for living? I'm a huge language learning fan, native speaker of ukrainian and russian and I've been learning japanese for 2 years yet I believe I'm only around B1. I wish I could learn languages fulltime, but I have to study 24/7 to get a job and I think that nothing will change when I'll get it. So I'm just curious what kind of job do you have and how can you devote so much time for all this languages?

Hello. I work as an interpreter of Mandarin, teach Mandarin and English and am writing a book about Chinese characters. I'm 34 now, but I learned a large number of these languages while I was a university student. I had to study a lot too, but I don't think finding time was a problem.

Vladimir Skultety I would definetely watch it. Also, the more I learn, the more I discover some important things about language learning, which are quite obvious but a lot of people just aren't taking them into account, e.g. having a good plan of what are you going to learn; listening a lot; correct way for chinese characters learning, etc. I would love to see some tips from you. Great channel btw, thanks for all the inspiration.

Thank you for the video! I have to say I was looking forward to something specifically for learners of tonal languages whose native tongue(s) is non tonal, I guess in your case, how you overcame the obstacle of first being able to hear the different tones and two being able to replicate it because you spoke non tonal languages prior to learning Mandarin.

How much practice would you say it takes to sound like a native?
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial
4 жыл бұрын
It's hard to tell, because it depends on a lot of things. Difficulty of the target language, environment, talent, motivation, age of the student etc. Anywhere from a few months (talented children) to never.

Last question: If you were to read the following quote, would you say this person is a native English speaker (I'm not very good at English). "Yes Thomas, I know. I know you know my name, my brother's name, the class we had together, and my appearance. I also know that after you figured out it was me, you developed a crush on me as well. Come on Thomas, you know exactly what I mean" Is this good Englsih

I don't know, it feels weird. 'the class we had together' sounds weird. 'my appearance' sounds weird. 'after you figured out it was me' should probably be 'after you've figured out it was me' in correct English. Stuff like that, but maybe some native speakers talk like that, who knows.

I might have an advantage because I am a musician who grew up with a tonal language. But my strategy is to behave like the midnight entity in Doctor Who: since I live in the target country, I repeat (under my breath) whatever I hear in my surroundings, copying the prosody closely. Of course sometimes I do that with recordings too. I think one thing people should be aware of is to NOT find it offensive to imitate people. Because we often use accents as a party trick mockingly, some people are shy to do a good accent in front of native speakers.
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial

Hi Israel. I think it is impossible to expect that people don't get offended by this. It is natural that people are sensitive to others imitating them. The key I think is to understand what is polite imitation and what is not.
@israellai

Vladimir Skultety you can't control whether people are offended, but you can control whether you find yourself offensive!

Israel Lai What do you mean find yourself offensive? You mean, whether what you say is offensive to others or whether what is said to you offends you?
@israellai
8 жыл бұрын
Vladimir Skultety for example in Sweden we make fun of Danish a lot - so if I were to actually speak Danish to danes, with good pronunciation, I'd subconsciously feel like I'm offending them. I think it's a common problem among many.
@VladimirSkultetyOfficial

You mean, you can control whether you yourself think something you say is offensive or not? I understand. But, there are things that are objectively offensive, regardless of how you personally feel about them, so you still objectively can offend people even if you think you do not and that is a problem:)

Received English or BBC english is just supposed to be the standard and proper english . Your's is much closer to the American one, which is regarded to be a poorer in vocabulary and simplified version of the 'original' one. But do not worry your vlog isstill intersting.

Why would it not be okay otherwise? Being Swedish, I'm mostly exposed to the American way of speaking, so it just comes naturally for me to speak like that. It actually bothers me and makes me cringe when my countrymen try to speak received English because it sounds so forced; that's not the English they're exposed to through most media, it's not the accent that comes naturally for any Swede. Ask any Swede to speak English and most will do it in the general American accent, though perhaps with a little Swenglish pronunciation. I think the same goes for most countries that haven't been English colonies. Older people were taught the British accent in school though, so most 60+ yr olds do talk like that, but it still sounds really silly.
