“Doesn’t music make you think? It made Stevie Wonder” You do a much better impression of Dana Carvey doing a Scotsman than you do of a Scotsman doing Stevie Wonder. 😂 Excellent video on pedaling. I read in a book a while back about doing 6 strokes with one leg while “resting” the other leg to help save energy and it definitely worked. Still use it today. Now, I’m going to integrate your suggestions because I know exactly what you’re talking about. Thanks.

Interesting video, coach. This is one of those “Use the Force, Luke” issues (“Feel the Float, Luke”) that is hard to put into words, isn’t it. I’ve been working on this recently since I decided to try shorter cranks, which in turn highlighted the fact that I had been relying too much on the quad-driven downstroke and not really doing much work on the upstroke unless I was sprinting. Combined with the increase in cadence from the shorter cranks (which is fine, as I was tending to stay in too hard a gear and grind, putting extra pressure on my knees) From 80/85 to 90/95 fast cruise, I’ve been trying much harder to apply myself to the upstroke and manage the float / dead spots top and bottom. I’ve found that getting my body forward and lower, and having a very good bike fit, results in a few occasions where everything just flows. Doesn’t happen all the time, but I’m definitely quicker when it does. Enjoy all of your videos coach.

Upstroke efficiency is MYTH. A rider can ONLY be efficient on ONE action. Either the Down stroke or the Up stroke. If you focus on the upstroke, you Sacrifice the power and efficiency of the down stroke. It's a matter of Bio-Mechanics. Simple. "When the participants were instructed to pull on the pedal during the upstroke, mechanical effectiveness was greater (index of force effectiveness=62.4+/-9.8%) and gross efficiency was LOWER" PubMed June 2007

Love to see how you love this, sharing and cycling. Just love and love. I have a question: i rode at 100-110 cadence , but lately i notice that my cadence makes my butt in pain , when i lower my cadence the pain gone but my feet tired faster. Do you have tips for my problem coach? Thank you
@BulletproofCycling

100-110 is on the high end for average cadence but I know a few guys who are like this but they are track riders and professional. I would stay that you may want to work on leg strength development and hip stability drills. Focus some sessions on cadence average of 95 which is still high. Aim for similar power! You’ll start to recruit more muscle fibres and may start to activate some fast twitch fibres. There are obviously lots of possible issues and I can’t be very prescriptive. Check out my LIVE stream tonight as I am talking about legs versus lungs. This might be relevant for you 👍

Wow thanks for the reply coach. I also feel like i have to try to work on my leg strength and drop down my cadence. Somehow i felt unnatural when riding on 90 cadence. I felt too much pressure on my knees. I felt comfort on 98-100 cadence. I follow your advice on the 1 more sec rule training. And when i go as long and fast as i could i ask myself why stop. The answer is my butt pain Looking forward for your live streams. Thanks coach

As alwqys thanks coach, On the 2nd thing to do Pedal it like a twin, i feel like i gain on that thing. When i pedal on my climbing gear 39/32 on the flat road. You can feel how you need to pedal on the same time cuz of the speed of cadance. Just relax & pedal it on the right timing and speed.

Thanks a lot! Honest question, when you pedal, do you think of moving your feet around (like running) or pushing down with your legs (mainly thighs and butt)?

"If you have a lot of float in your cleat, you'll hear a click, click, click. This is your foot and pedal moving at different speeds." I took my bike into the shop to troubleshoot this click and they couldn't find anything. This is the first I've heard of this. So is the clicking something i need to fix? Tighten the cleat? Change the gear? Or just understand what's going on? Thank you

my right leg is worsening the flow, in particular I try to pull with my right leg after 180 degrees unintentionally and I cannot prevent my right leg doing that. Because of this, my left leg pauses at 0 degrees. This ruins my whole bike flow. Strangely, this started recently, previously there was no such problem. What can I do to correct this?

Quickest, best way is to ride flat pedals. This will 'teach' a rider to be more efficient. One-legged drills are a waste for beginners and novices, because they LACK the necessary bike handling skills to be 'good' riders. Forget these drills if you are a beginner-novice and even if you are a veteran, (especially if you're not competing) If your Braking, Steering & Turning skills are not stellar, stop wasting your time. WAY too many road riders are terrible bike handlers. Focus on becoming a good solid, PREDICTABLE rider.👍

I am not sure what is being demonstrated at 2 minutes in??? Are we saying you pull up once your foot goes past the psuhing down? What is sweeping meant to mean your leg or foot is doing?. For the First Drill, What is he actually trying to do? On the Second Drill he says let the pedal guide your foot. Does this mean you dont push down and pull up with your leg or you do or something else? What exactly are we doing with one leg pedals that is different from me just jumping on a bike and pedaling with one foot anyway??. In drill 3 is he just saying we pedal slower at 50rpm?. What am I feeling on drill three, the foot moves right?. What is different to normal pedaling?
