Until I watched this video I assumed that my handspan was fixed to a ninth. I am now more flexible with help from your stretching excercises, and can span a tenth! So many thanks- I have been more confident tackling the ist Chopin study because of your very helpful hints on hand and finger stretches(and , of course, your in depth video on the study generally) With grateful thanks.😊❤

Keep going and stretch your hands, this can help a lot! And whenever there is a chord / interval you cannot reach, just turn it into a fast arpeggio. In time, the octave will come. 🤗

I've been doing these stretches since this video came out. I have to say these actually increased my scan much more than I expected. My hands used to be tiny but using these stretches for a few years my span increased from an octave all the way to an 11th! And I'm only 13 years old! It really widened my range of repertoire and I am now able to play a lot of Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, etc. Sadly though my right hand can only go to a tenth but this still works really well. Nice video and thanks for this technique that nobody else teaches us!

Thank you for this video! I can reach a 9th, stretch 10th, but I have a lot of webbing between my fingers and thumb, which hurts my span, despite having decently long fingers. I pretty much cannot make a 90 degree angle between my thumb and index finger on either hand. I will definitely try these exercises, hopefully I can reach 10th comfortably stretch 11th someday. I love romantic era music and they all use big chords and the webbing makes it hard to contort my hands to them.

I think the exercises should definitely help, even with the webbing between the fingers. All the best for your piano journey, I also love romantic era music! :)

Stretches aren’t going to work in my opinion because it’s not building anything. I play the guitar and piano, and because of playing the guitar over the years, my left hand has a stable solid reach advantage over my right hand. I will soon start to play guitar with my right hand to level the playing field. Trust me, guitar hands will make piano hands happy! It’s going to be challenging, but worth the effort for great sounding notes!

Hi Danae, currently I'm a 24 yr music hobbyist whose right hand and left hand can both reach a comfortable 9th interval. Is it possible for my hand span to increase to a comfortable 10th if I follow the exercises you recommended in this video? This is because I believe some of the pianist start training their hand span since they were young. But I didn't do any of these exercises beforehand, until I saw this video recently.

I think that this could definitely be possible, especially if you haven‘t really done a lot of stretching exercises before. All the best to you and thanks for watching!
@cyba9774

Hello Danae, it works very good. That stretch you showed me and Horowitz' exercise helped me a lot. I could barely play a major 10th before on white keys, left hand more than right - and now I can play a 10th comfortable even on a white and a black key on both hands (e. g.) and even play a 11th. And that after 4 months, stretching every day each pair of fingers 20-30 seconds each (I do it with every pair of fingers + 1st and 2nd and 1st and 5th, because other intervals become more comfortable to grasp, too - like often found in Chopins music e. g.), and now starting to include Horowitz exercise for 3 Minutes a day with one day rest in the week or so - Plus practicing the 10ths regularly. I always did a little bit of stretching intuitively before I found your video, but never did it regularly with clearly noticeable results. However, hearing that from a professional pianist helped a lot and encouraged me to do it almost as a daily habit - and all major 10ths and arpeggi including maj. 10ths are now easy to play for me. Thank you very much, Danae :)

What should I do if my hands are big enough to reach a 10th (I can play the two notes of the interval together and separately) but not enough to do an 11th separately? My question is because of my inability to do the first exercise at the piano. Nice video, by the way :)
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! In that case, I would do both exercises using the 10th and with the first one, simply push the palm of the hand forward until you reach the keys so that the fingers can spread out and stretch as much as possible. :)

I am male, 5ft 3 and I can only stretch my hand 17cm.I play the flute. I gave up the piano as I couldn't reach chords on even an easy Beethoven Sonata, so I took singing as a second study.The two most discouraging things were 1) seeing a 14 year old girl my height play an 11th. My whole hand barely covered her palm 2) A girl of about 11 and my height could reach a 10th. I told her I could do an octave but it hurt, but a 7th easily. She said not to worry because I would grow. At that point I just cracked up. I was 21 at the time. What rubbed salt in the wound was she then said "Oh, you mean really stretch?", and easily manoeuvered her thumb and pinkie further and played a 12th with ease. I wished I could fall through the floor at that point! I have never dared to compare with another male, I think I would shudder. My head spins just to see you do those intervals!

Wow, I totally understand your frustration because if you are not comfortable playing an octave, it really is difficult to play the piano. But I think it’s so nice that you stuck with music and now have found an instrument that suits your hands. 👌🏻🤗 Thanks so much for watching 🙏🏻

@ It was really funny because my mother ruled out almost all instruments for various reasons. It came down to the flute or oboe. Then, my stepfather said I couldn't play the oboe because I had a weak chest. (I trusted him because he was organ scholar at Christchurch AND Corpus Christi colleges at Oxford University). As for the weak chest, well I came 4th in a 10km cross country run with 600 other kids, would regularly cycle 70km in three hours. and was the captain of the cricket team and main fast strike bowler. I also have a bronze medal in fencing (swordfighting).

What definitely is possible is to make your stretch bigger, so that even if your fingers don’t “grow” per se, your span still changes. With a lot of practice, your hand form can actually change also after the age of 20. :)
