Upon reaching intermediate-advanced level (about HSK 6 under the ~2017 syllabus), studying classical poetry can be very useful for building fundamental language vocabulary that focuses on the meaning of individual characters rather than groups of words. Take it slow and study one short poem a month, study each thoroughly, understand the meaning of each and every word and line, and memorise them.

for anyone reading, I used a calligraphy book to repeat and practice words, I learned well but I'd spend a lot of time for only a few words. Then I got pleco and used their flashcard system. Kinda worked, way more time efficient, manually moving words from the "new words deck" to the "old words deck" was hard to judge sometimes, new words would take a while to pick up because I'd have 30 or so words on the "new word deck". Moved to ankidroid(you can integrate it with pleco), spaced repetition is simply real life magic. In a day I had to rush a ton of vocabulary I was able to learn 80 words in a single(long) day. Most days I learn 40 new words(on vacation rn) a day without pain.

Ive been writing down words i see in my chinese book that i had gotten from my school libary! I have almost filled up my notebook! Your videos have been helping me very, very much! Ní hěn lì hài!(I hope i put that right...!!) ❤❤❤❤ OH YES! Can we have a video showing what the most commonly used character stroke and what they mean? I am truly sorry! I don't know the best way to explain it...

Thank you so much for this video. I learned so much and got a lot of ideas that I think are going to help me out a lot. I thought I would help you too. On your notebook you wrote"wrap up" and then wrote about wrapping up to go outside. In America we wouldn't use that phrase that way. We would say: You should wrap up that sandwich before you put it in the fridge. You could alsosay: We should wrap up this meeting so everyone can get home before rush hour starts. Another sentence could be: She was wrapped up in a blanket in front of the fire reading for hours. For your sentence I would use the phrase "bundle up". If you don't bundle up before going out to play in the snow you could get sick. I hope you don't mind me giving you this information. There might be other areas where they use wrap up the way you do. I can only speak from my experience living in America.

This is a great video - people (myself included) tend to dive straight into learning a language without much thought on the method they should use, and thus learn inefficiently. You've clearly thought long and hard about what methodology to use and came up with some really useful tips as a result, so thank you for that!

I think the most important advice is learning vocabulary by context since words are not used separately when speaking a language, I just find some audios with phrases using the vocabulary I want to learn, make flashcards in Anki with the character transcription and audio, that's it.

An excellent video and great tips. Writing new words down sounds simple, it is, I just need to do it :) Something else I have found I needed to overcome was the confidence to speak these news words in a sentence with someone. I’m going to make mistakes, potentially sounds a little silly and learning to embrace this takes a bit of confidence. 太感谢了 ☯️

Are you pronounce in Simplified Chinese? Thank you and waiting for your response.
@GraceMandarinChinese
4 жыл бұрын
Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese are pronounced the same. The different part is about the accent and some pronunciation of characters in Taiwan (Where I am from) being different from China. (but generally speaking, it's not that many differences.)
@YY-pu4md
4 жыл бұрын
Pronunciation is generally divided into Mandarin and Cantonese, Written characters are divided into traditional and simplified. Mainland China uses simplified Chinese and speak Mandarin, Taiwan uses traditional Chinese and speak Mandarin(with a little different accent), HK and Macao use traditional Chinese and speak Cantonese, which is also many people's mother tongue in Guangdong province.

Do you use any SRS flashcard apps? If - yes, what's your favorite? I use Ankidroid for a good amount of years. It's a bit geeky and not too overly user friendly, however it is free and amazing (from my personal point of view). It enables you to memorize your stuff your way because it allow you to go quite deep into the app configuration.

1. Memorize general meaning of characters 2. Finding pattern or rules of Chinese words. Since sometimes two character words can have similar meaning with each words 3. Imagining yourself using the words. Don’t write Han Yu = mandarin, but write the example using han yu. E.g. wo Yao xue xi hanyu. entire yourself effectively in this language

Thank you so much for your videos, Grace! I started to learn Chinese a few months ago from an app. Although the app is wonderful (like playing a game, so you don't even realize you are learning), there were idiosyncrasies with pronunciation (like bu and yi changing tones before certain words) and also confusion with how I should pronounce "x" and "c". Your videos have definitely cleared up a lot of my confusion. Thanks so much for all you do!
