T-stop is one of the most important moves in inline skating. This is a technique of slowing down of braking that is used by almost all the skaters, starting from the beginners and ending with the pros. Why? Because it has a great number of advantages and only a few disadvantages. So
it is very simple to perform
If you know how to skate properly on one foot, and can skate one foot for a few centimetres you're already ready to perform your first t-stop
It doesn't require any preparation moves. U can switchv from your simple stride to the drag in a milliseconds. You don't need additional turning off your torso, additional bending of the knees, squat of anything like this. Blink. And you're ready to slow down.
It can be used in very narrow places. Like on that small lane. Half a meter width or even a 30 cm is enough. It's very crucial during the speed maneuvering or some tricks like that.
It can be used almost on all surfaces that you can skate. Asphalt, tiles, cobblestones, grass, ground, rainy streets. Of course it will require some additional skills but it will slow you down and will probably save your life.
It is very adjustable. You can chang the strength of it, the duration of usage and so on. It's almost like a brake in a car.
And finally and that's probably the main advantage. Your neighbor kid will stop laughing at you because you're still using the heel brake.
And I probably know only two disadvantages of the drag:
It can't be used as an extreme stopping technique. You will need a rather big period of time to slow down. Sometimes it will be better just to fall on your protection gear than to wait when the t-stop will stop you. Two feet slides like parallel or magic are good for extreme stops
And it KILLs your wheels. But that's the price that you have to pay for being safe.
So how does the t-stop position looks like. Like that. That's pretty simple to get into this position. You just skate put all your weight on one foot for a small moment and put the other foot into stopping position. The main problem here is to keep that position, to not lose it. And there are only three crucial parts that you have to care about here. Two is about the rolling foot. And they are almost the same as for simple one foot skating. The knee is properly bend (knee is above the toes) and the skate is on the outside edge. It's possible to drag on the inside edge and center edge but it is much easier on the outside one. And to make it outside you just have to put the knee like this pointing to the side.
The third point is the back dragging foot. Yeah. It's called the t-stop, but it's not really a T. It's not even a proper L, you know Bill Stoppard calls it L stop. The position of the feet looks like that. So that angle between your feet should be a little less than 90 degrees. Not too much because you will not get the proper drag with a too sharp angle but not more because in that case friction will just make it more and will turn you. And most probably your t-stop will turn into s-stop. No that S but that one.
So if you're controlling all the three points the knee the edge and the angle you will get the good dragging. In small speeds that will be enough. But owhen you're fatser the friction is rather high and The question is usually how to keep the angle sharp and the answer is simple , don't try to make only wit your foot. Turn in all your body. Tur the torso, close your hip and try to point with your knee to the ground that will keep your back foot in the right position and keep the drag. You can also play a little with the weight distribution like that. Move your weight to the back foot to make t more effective and fast. Of course you should do it carefully and gradually. The first knee is not that bent and the weight is somewhere in the center. And I'm making with my body. I just gradually move the shoulders back. That will help you a lot on downhills when you understand that speed is too high
Also if you want to look more cocky while holding the tea cup you can use only thumb and one finger. You can use only one wheel while t-stopping . The front one, or the back one. If you understand the technique good it won't be difficult for you. If you need only a small slowing down that is what you need. And it wheel also save your middle wheels.and that's all.
