Many plaudits to whoever is working your social media account at Illawarra. Most regional bee clubs run similar seesions, with lectures and demonstrations. I have no idea why more clubs don't record their meetings and post onto social media. Today, knowledge is only a click away. Keep up the good work.

Hey Paul G thanks so much for the great rap. We are all for sharing good quality info to other beekeepers. Because in the end it means bees will benefit. Are you in Australia? Do you keep bees? And if you do, are you in a club?🙂🐝

Gday guys, very timely vid, thanks all!! Our FLOW had been declining all season without evidence of AFB, we requeened thinking we may have a failing queen, however after inspection today I’m pretty sure we have it (less than 20 bees in total and no queen) I’ll petrol-rag our bees & get a positive test done before irradiating (in Brisbane!)

Great point! Yes the scale can dry out after some time. That's why its best to test multiple cells especially the ones that show visible signs of the disease.

Did you iradiate the Long Langstroth and all frames and foundation? Good information. Thank you.

Yes and yes, it all went to Steritech for irradiation. It's all still there and will be picked up next week hopefully. The long langstroth has many advantages, mainly avoiding stacking boxes. But the big draw back is moving them is difficult if you are by yourself. Plus it's to big to fit in the boot of most cars.

Awesome video! It is wonderful that this was filmed and shared with everyone forever rather than just being a meeting. I will use petrol from now on to kill a hive. I have used methylated spirits in the past, and it seemed to work very well. I was just wondering if it might be appropriate too, or whether it leaves residue in the hive. I ask only as metho was recommended to me by someone with more experience at the time. Thanks so much!

Hi Ben thanks for the feedback. Where do you live? If in NSW Petrol is a legal way to euthanize a AFB hive. Where as methylated spirits is not. You may also find petrol is more humane because the vapors do their job very quickly. Sad as it is, we know when AFB hits a hive we must take measures to eliminate the risk to other healthy hives and their bees. The use of petrol has been examined extensively and you can be assured it's the best method possible. Of course use extreme caution when working with petrol and never ignite the fuel.

@@SaveOurBees I'm in the ACT. Yeah I'll use petrol definitely next time, I was just curious. I thought the petrol smell would hang around in the hive, I'm glad it's so effective and doesn't affect the hive going forward.

I cant count how many times i've heard American beekeepers say AFB hives have to be BURNED. Apparently this knowledge from the 1980's has not fully permeated arrogant American knowledge base.

I’ve watched two videos of beekeepers euthanizing hives with soapy water. One was for disease and the other was an Africanized hive of hyper aggressive bees. Both done the job just fine. I myself would be more apt to use the saturated petrol rag, both for effectiveness and convenience
