Yes take the front 1/2 bolts out then 4 7/16 bolts on each side. Take an 3/8 extension and pry down on the front of the pan using the front main bearing cap. it will come down enough to slide in a screwdiver on both sides. Note not big screw drivers med size. you can easily pop in cover even with the little rubber ears on half moon seal. put rtv in corners, and a very thin coat on rubber seal. Remove screwdrivers . start putting in bolts from back to front. take ur time no problem.

DROP YOUR OIL PAN to get the cover back on. Not much, just a little to give you room. Otherwise you RISK the chance of RUINING the crank shaft seal...

That's exactly how my brother showed me many years ago. After the timing cover is bolted on, before you pull out the screw drivers, squeeze in some black rtv. Both along the oil pan gasket and in the corners where the timing cover rubber seal meets the oil pan gasket. Then pull out the screw drivers. Let the rtv set up good before you start the engine. My brother worked at a chevy dealer and this is how they did it.

+warriorcycles The next time you have to do one of these what you do is cut or file down the two tabs that go between the timing cover and the oil pan, reuse the gasket on the bottom of the timing chain cover, clean it up real good put some flexible rtv on it ,(like ultra grey)prepare your timing cover gasket and push down on the cover and try to align it with two screw drivers on opposite sides of the timing cover and firmly push the cover towards the block, may take a few tries but it works well,I learned that one from a 30+ year mechanic and have done this to 3 engines without fail

No, you do not. I mean, I got it up there just today. Used Permatex non-hardening gasket maker, #80060 I believe it was. It's not that hard to fit it in there with the oil pan already on. We'll see if it leaks at all...

I always soak the chain in oil overnight. That way the whole thing is all lubed up between the links and bushings.10 -15 min is probably good enough.

Hmm, screen name checks out lol. Nah but in all seriousness, I just did this exact job on my '70 GMC as part of a basic motor refresh after wiping out a cam lobe. Not finished yet. Crossing my fingers that both the front seal won't immediately leak, and that no metal fragments will circulate my motor and either a) wipe out the cam bearings, b) significantly clog the oil pickup screen, or c) wipe out a rod journal and bearing.

Flat tappet cams have just a slight taper on lobes that drives the cam sprocket lightly against the block/wear bushing as it rotates. If you're worried about it, go with a nylon button. I do not like the steel cam buttons because... hardness [bad deal if timing chain cover is aluminum] and too many parts. Simple is usually better.

I'd like to see done on a newer SBC with a plastic cover and a cast aluminum oil pan.
@Thundarr995

I know your post is 3yrs old at this point but anyway...When working on the ones that have the plastic timing cover you don't use the rubber timing cover seal. You just make damn sure to clean the pan area with brake cleaner and make sure its dry. Fill the channel on the timing cover with black silicone and stuff it on there. It works with the ones with aluminum pans too. Sometimes you have to lower the pan a little bit for it to work on aluminum pans. Let the silicone dry for 24hrs. I changed the timing chain 2yrs ago in my S-10. Truck is a 97, 4.3L & has the aluminum pan. Still not leaking. I'm not the only one fixing it this way. There's a video of a shop fixing it like this. Chilton's manual says you gotta pull the engine to replace the timing chain. There's no room to take the pan out unless you disconnect the engine from the mounts and lift it with a hoist. Even then there may or may not be enough room to get the pan off of a 96 & newer S-10. Always replace the plastic cover with a new one. I went to the dealer and bought one for $100. The aftermarket ones hardly fit or need to be trimmed,they probably won't fit straight out of the box. I put longer bolts temporarily in place of the shorter pan bolts so the gasket stays lined up,if I have to lower the pan a little.

The only way to do it while it's in the car is Remove motor mount bolts Jack up motor(2x4 under the pan) When mounts have cleared lower portion of mount reinstall the bolts to keep engine lifted. Lower jack. Loosen 8 bolts on left and eight bolts on right leaving the bolts by the rear main seal alone Pry front of pan down about 3/8 of an inch and insert screwdrivers or chisels or whatever to make sure it stays gapped. Apply a flat bead of rtv black on engine side than install gasket. Than apply a thin layer to the gasket . I applied a liberal amount of rtv to the groove in the cover and than installed the rubber gasket in the groove. I used the concrete on the garage floor to make sure the gasket was seated. I let mine cure overnight but I imagine you don't have to. I than cut away the excess rubber that was sticking past the metal of the cover. Apply a liberal amount of rtv black on the top of the gasket material you just trimmed and to the edges of the oil pan engine block meeting

Than install the cover starting from the bottom and tilting it up while making sure the bottom stays in. Start two bolts and work your way around evenly drawing it in. Lower the engine bacteria to its mounts and tighten.Tighten down oil pan reinstall the balancer and wait 24 hours for rtv to fully cure. Start the motor up and let it run for a few minutes. Turn it off and put a piece of paper under it so you will easily see leaks. No leaks assemble water pump, alternator, power steering etc. roast your tires for a job well done.🏎
