I also live in a rust belt state, Northwest Illinois. I installed a TRD skid plate on my 2021 4Runner Limited yesterday. When I removed the original skid plate, there was no anti-seize or lube on the bolts. Whenever I remove and install parts, I always use anti-seize on the fasteners if the fasteners are exposed to hot surfaces, such as exhaust systems. If the fasteners are not exposed to heat, such as the skid plate, I coat the fasteners with wheel bearing grease. I have a little can with an acid brush I use to apply the grease. I also had to re-tap the 10mm bolt holes where the skid plate bolts are installed. Someone cross threaded one hole. Greasing the bolts make routine service so much easier and also prevents the bolt threads from rusting, especially here in the rust belt. Save the anti-seize for hot applications.

Do not remove the brackets! There are three bolts on each bracket. Do not remove the far rear one. Remove the one bolt closest to the front and the one in the middle. The far rear bolt will keep the brackets in positioned in place, and then you install the remaining four bolts, which also hold up the skid plate.

The lifting of the skid plate to start the front bolts is the difficult part. Even with a floor jack it is tough because the skid plat doesn't balance well.

The bolts that I took out from the 4runner have like a reduced diameter section, and then it gets thicker. The bolts provided with my kit don't have that reduced section, so it's really hard to install it. Can I ask you if the bolts you removed were like that as well? thanks!

Some people reused the bolts from the rear 2 bolts of their original skid plate. My only issue was rusty threads making it hard to thread in. Another option is to cut down the bolts provided with the new kit.

If I already have a trd skid plate, to take it off it would just be 4 nuts right

Yes. Actually, there are four bolts holding up the skid plate. Make sure you support the skid plate, either with your belly or by using a couple of ratchet straps to hold it while removing the bolts. The TRD skid plate is rather heavy. I would guess around 40 pounds.
