In the summer we like to use a clothesline to dry our clothes. We've had one in the yard pretty much since we bought the house. That was almost 20 years ago, and the "elevator" at the one end of the clothesline is kind of broken -- the pulley/wheel that rides against the pole is cracked, which makes raising and lowering the clothesline difficult. I bought a new "clothesline elevator" (Link below) and set about installing it. It's just a matter of opening up the clothesline loop, to remove it from the pulley. Then the old elevator is dismounted from the pole and the new one is mounted in it's place. However, I then also discovered that the mini winch used to join the two ends of the clothesline was also broken. So that required another trip to the hardware store. (Not shown! :-) The mini winch is a simple one-way crank. You insert both ends of the clothesline and then crank it until the loop is tight. And then of course it rained.

FYI for Canadian viewers. The elevator shown here is made in China by Strata & sold at Home Depot. If you want to support Canadian business, purchase your Elevator from Wright Clothesline Products, available at Home Hardware. The Canadian made product is $12.00 cheaper than Home Depot. I paid $69.99 plus HST in October 2020.

Thanks for the tip. I just purchased the ball bearing elevator from the local Home Hardware at a lower price than the Strata unit from Home Despot and as you noted, the Wright product is manufactured in Canada!

I have never seen one of those before, and now I want one. Sure, it's just me and my 7 year old, so there's not much more than one load of drying every week. Also, my yard here in San Francisco isn't exactly conducive to clotheslines. And yet, I still want one of those. Thanks for introducing me to them!

I would just buy a length of poly rope (something rated for outdoors) and then replicate the rope pattern. If you freeze frame around 1:55 you can see the whole rope path. Or just sneak into a local Big Box home store and find one of these and take a few photos of it to see how the rope is fed through the pulleys.

Since you normally hang cloths on the bottom line.. I would think having the joint on the top would make more sense? No?
@Wordsnwood
6 жыл бұрын
I think this way is easier for us: In order to get full use of the line, we need to start with the splice tucked up against the pulley, and then it get's moved to the back as we fill the line with clothes. If the splice was on the top, then it would need to be positioned right against the far pulley before you start filling the line. That's all the way across the yard and we find it too easy to lose track of it there. We just find it easier to keep track of when it is on the bottom line and against the near pulley.
@RossTheGenMan

I see I never thaught of that. Good point. Also the far pulley might need some oil.. sounded a bit sqeeky

Pull the rope and the elevator goes up, lifting your laundry up and out of the way. Pull the rope in the other direction and the elevator comes down, bringing the laundry to a comfortable height for putting it on and off the clothesline. That's all.

@Wordsnwood
2 жыл бұрын
Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but it's just a length of rope... just pick some up at the hardware store and untie one end of the old rope, then tie the new to the old rope, pull it through the pulleys, and then tie the other end.

There's nothing to it. You feed in a piece of rope from each side (ie: NOT from the same side) and then turn the crank.
