Whats the advantage in using a heli coil instead of just tapping to the next size up and using a new bolt?

I wonder if this solution is appropriate for drilling out & rethreading a fused bolt which cannot otherwise be removed? The transmission drainplug on one of my vehicles has been severly over-torqued with probably an impact wrench.

I just die tap it, and put the hemicoil on the bolt and rachet them both in together. Miraculously it work. It was on the hinge hole of a BMW 740il bonnet.

Hey Adept A c7 is mixing diesel in coolant. could the reason be bad injector cups? thanks!!

+Omar That is the most likely cause. The best course of action is to remove all six cups and replace them.

I use grease to catch all the shavings made from the drill bit and on the tap. Brake grease is super tacky and high temperature resistant.

u still use Heli coils on exhaust bolts or u use a timesert kit?
@AdeptApe

+kwmiked I've never had to install a helicoil in a Cat exhaust bolt hole, mostly because opposed to stripping out the bolt usually it breaks the bolt in the bolt hole. So your usually trying to remove a broken bolt opposed to installing threads. Then you can just retap the hole to clean up the threads.

How can I get in tough with you? 3406 broken exhaust manifold stud flush , what's the best way to take the sucker out?

adeptape@yahoo.com they make a manifold bolt drill out kit that lets you really drill the bolt hole out straight. It's very difficult without it. Be careful though, there is a coolant passage behind those bolts. You go too deep and you'll ruin the cylinder head.

You have a video on repairing a head bolt threads in block? Would you use cat helicoil kit?

I usually leave the valve covers on and cut new threads through the base. The base is so soft you can cut the threads without using a drill too.

GREAT video! If you can. Try doing an exhaust manifold bolt. I've had a few bad experience with them. And would like some insight. THANKS

+Raul Pereyra They are very hard to get out, usually the stud breaks off inside the head and then you have to drill out the bolt.

+chris weigand Thanks for the compliment. Well that is quite a broad question. Learn and study the systems more than others do and you'll be invaluable. That and don't be afraid of new stuff because it comes out all the time.
