If you are not cutting the sub floor to install deeper then I assume you do not need to install the mortar. Correct? Does the base of the shower pan rest on the subfloor directly - other wise it would not get support as you stand in the shower pan?

What the heck is "stiff mortar?" Thinset? Regular cement mix with gravel? I'm installing a ready-made shower pan and I just need go figure out what the heck "stiff mortar is." I looked it up on the Home Depot app and all kinds of mortar come up but no 'stiff mortar.'

I also think they are referring to the consistency and not the type of mortar!🙂 I have used thinset on two of my Dreamline slimline shower pans. Regular type N (like Quickcrete Mason Mix) would work as well I suppose.

For anyone finding this at a later date: you can do everything from above. You connect the drain assembly to the pan, the pan + drain assembly slides loosely over the drain pipe, then to make it water tight you push a rubber seal down around the drain pipe from the top side (inside the drain assembly) and then most drain assemblies have a clamping ring that screws down on the rubber to hold it in place before snapping on the shiny waffle grate. Having access to below is only needed if you need to move the location of the drain pipe, and even then you can do that from above by removing portions of subfloor and replacing them.

Does the waterproof paper that goes behind the side wall tiles go into the lip/flange around the shower pan and the tiles cover the that lip/flange. Correct?
@edwozniak1754

It seems that using tar paper prevents the shower base from bonding with the floor. Manufacturers tend to advise roughing up the floor surface so that the cement will bond to the floor.
@HandymanHustle

Mortar really is only there to make the base sound and secure. Tar paper is because without it the wood would suck the moisture out of the mortar and it will be more brittle after it cures. So these guys are just being thorough, not wrong

I used Custom Bedding Mortar for a shower pan, but there is an area that now needs a little additional slope. What product can I use on top of the bedding mortar to feather in some additional slope? It's only about 3 sq ft on one side of the drain that needs about 1/2 inch of additional rise along the edge of the pan. Thank you.

You do NOT have to add that black plastic membrane that you usually use when installing a tile shower floor becuase the shower pan is waterproof. Correct? Just checking because one site said to install it.
@checo8187

Its more for holding the mortar in place while it cures, so that it doesn’t run down the cavities in the subfloor. It does not serve as a waterproofing membrane at all.

How the heck are they staring out with a recessed area in their subfloor? My house is built with 3/4 subfloors. If I cut that out, there's just a hole underneath. Makes this whole video kind of irrelevant from the start.
@checo8187
11 ай бұрын
They installed 1/2 plywood over the 3/4 subfloor, then cut the 1/2 plywood to the size of the pan, I personally wouldn’t have done that, I would have placed the pan over the plywood itself, you would literally have 1 1/4 of support underneath instead of the 3/4 .

No….. “ make sure that all the plumbing is correct”….. THANK FOR NOTHING. I need to remove a tube and replace it with a shower pan. 1) on a concrete slab.. so no install the plumbing after the pan is in place 2) the tub is “ x” wide with the drain centered on the tub but the new shower pan is quite a bit wider… so the shower pan drain location ( centered in the pan) is NOT where the current drain or plum is is. So 3) must the concrete slab be cut out / opened and additional plumbing be relocated? 4) are there tips to assure re-locating the plumbing to align with the new shower pan drain location. 5) how in the HELLLLL does one glue the pvc pipe together with a huge drop in shower pan? Thanks but this video shows the “ easy” install.. Some of us need help with the head scratching.
@DJDesignBuilds

Yes, you have to cut out the concrete and move the plumbing. They do sell prefabricated pans that sit higher and you can run a drain pipe from the pan to the original drain. Or you can build a small platform and run the drain underneath it. There's always different ways.
