I just wanted to thank you - after two years of looking at damaged drywall when we removed the old 1991 backsplash in my kitchen, I used 3-4 of your videos to install a new one - from drywall installation, repair, tile setting, and grout. All while hubby was out of town :-). If I could post a photo I would; needless to say my husband was blown away and will never again argue with me when I want to tackle something myself. I will continue to check to see if you have tips for any new projects!!

These videos taught me maybe the two most important lessons of home DIY that I've ever learned: rooms are never square and level, and every project has to account for the fact that materials expand contract with temperature and humidity. Accounting for those two facts changed everything for me and my results.

Great video. But a bit perplexed as why you did not show grouting and especially what you do with the bottom as it meets the countertop. Do you cover the lowest grout line with water proof silicone caulk/clear, or use grout sealer or etc? Any recommendations appreciated. Thanks.
@justincourt668
5 жыл бұрын
Well he cant grout it right away.. I'd wait until the next day to do that. Where the tile meets the counter you'll have to scribe your tile depending your situation and cut it as per. As far as counter to tile you chaulk it. I've had home owners want it grouted. It depends on who it's for really.

What would you do if you got to the ceiling and had a 1/4” gap left? Just cut and fill with slivers? Or did you measure first and size the tiles so that doesn’t happen? Also for a DYIer that is only going to do this job once would you rent a tile cutter or could you get away with a chop saw with a stone cutting blade? Great video as usual man thanks for posting.

I try to avoid it by measuring it ahead of time. But if its unavoidable the last 5 rows near the ceiling I'll make the grout line 1/32 bigger. Makes that line disappear and no one will notice the slight change in the line. Better to just avoid tho if possible

My countertop to under cabinets is out by about 1/8” - 3/16” from end to end but I am still going to use the new quartz countertop as level and caulk any small gap underneath the cabinets. Nobody looks up under there so it won’t be noticeable and way easier than running a raised ledger for the first row. PS. Don’t forget to add spacer thickness when figuring out how many tiles will fit underneath the cabinets, unless the tiles you are using have built in spacers.

I just want to say thank you! This video helped me a lot in installing the beveled subway tile in my shower, and while I couldn't afford a laser level, and was forced to work top-down and upside-down (tile goes on top of the plastic tub surround and on the ceiling), it turned out great. Luckily no one has ever thought the lines were off. I uh, followed the bathroom video for the actual mortar and structure stuff; this just helped get the lines right.

A+ for video! You are great at explaining everything and it was a huge help to have watched this prior to installing my subway tile for my back splash. However, you made it seem WAY too easy... It went just as smooth as you said when I was in open areas like behind the range. But the truth really is the difficulty level is much higher than you made it seem lol. Under the cabinets to cutting every piece to fit around a window between cabinets all the way to the ceiling. I found myself so angry at trying to keep the lines correct and laser leveled just right. Thanks for making my life easier but also setting my expectations way too high that it was going to be simpler than I thought.

I wish you would have talked more about the initial start. It looks like you started on the second row first on a good level datum to build. Then once that's done you remove your wall support and custom cut and fill in the first row? I started the first row and realized I may have to slightly float some tiles and cover it with caulk but then if I try to build the second row it will compress that floating tile.

Helpful video! Will you or do you have a part 2 video that delves into applying the grout next? A few added questions on this video: 1. Most of the video I noticed you made your final pass of the tile adhesive horizontally. Later in the video you made a final pass vertically... does it matter which direction? 2. When you start laying the tile against the adjacent wall do you leave a tiny gap or butt the tile tight against the wall? 3. How big are the tile spacers? 1/8, 1/16, etc.?
