This video is a life saver. I had 4 of these type tires on a large garden cart. They had all cracked all the way around and were leaking, so I decided to replace them. Went to a local tractor supply store and bought 4 new ones. While standing in line to pay out, the guy behind me asked, "hey, buddy. Have you ever replaced any tires like that?". "No, I replied". He then said, " I've tried that...you better take them to a tire store to get them mounted!!" Your video makes it "do-able"....Thanks!

I would make sure to check the inside of the tire all the way around. You want to make sure there isn't a nail or thorn sticking through. If there is, you would just be wasting your time and having to patch a brand new tube. You can use a spray bottle with a weak soap/water mixture to find the leak. Also, I would use dish soap for mounting and dismounting and not any kind of petroleum product. It's easier to clean up and it doesn't damage the rubber. And if you don't have a washer you can try to put a little air in the tube first to help keep the stem in the wheel hole. Great video and I like the vise setup. I would have never thought of that.

***** I wouldn't use oil, but mere soapy water, reason being the tire can slip on the wheel, but I also recommend adding ATF after putting the tube in, it swells the cracks inside so you can have like a tire in a tire when then cracks seal up. Some just use ATF as a quick fix for side wall leaks but always go for a tube, you don't want to go back and do the job again. Slime the tube before fill and never look back.
@randalldavidson4998

I always take a paper towel and wipe the inside of the tire, then pull the paper towel out and see if it has any tears in it. If it does then you have a thorn or nail or something sticking inside the tire that will puncture the tube. If no tears install the tube and pump it up.

The best tool I've used to keep the valve stem from sliding back out... A metal/alloy stem cap. Drill a hose in the top that'll accommodate a piece of string. Tie a knot on the string on the bottom side of the cap. Run the string through the hole...You're now good to go!

The only thing you forgot is to mention is to get the tube facing the rite way. I have put them in backwards and had the stem disappear and then had to poke a hole in my new tube to fix it. Best trick a good friend showed me is to inflate the tube and then you see for sure witch way it goes then deflate it and put it in. I also have a stem tool that screws on to hold it ( it also removes the core and rethreads the inside) handy as heck. Keep on keeping on. How was red truck?

Yeah the washer is a nice trick. Y'all can leave the washer on until air is in the tube to avoid holding it with the pliers. If you can't find the right size washer, drilling a hole in a coin works. Washer costs more than a penny anyways. lol.
@chuckd7423
4 жыл бұрын
@@whycantthisbeblank I'm not sure how that would work. The reason the washer works to keep the valve stem from retreating back into the rim is because the valve stem cap stops the washer from coming off the stem. You have to remove the valve stem cap to air up the tire, and once you remove the cap, there's nothing holding the washer in place, so the stem can retreat back into the rim.
@kernelbadness

I partially inflate tube to prevent stem from retreating. It also make it less likely to be pinched when recounting tire on rim.

Kiora Steve from NZ There is a South Park episode about how men taught their kids how to fix broken things around the house by calling the handyman. But one day the handymen were all gone except a few old timers. A price war eventuated, and the handymen were becoming so rich they all drove pimped up vans and wore fur coats and gold chains and had young hot girls by their side. In the end civilization almost collapsed and the billionaire handymen started a space race. See you in Space Steve.

Hi Steve, I'm in Melbourne Australia, and have an old Rover Rancher 11Hp each wheel has 2 half rims that bolt together and make this job so much easier.. but I find putting a small amount of air into the tube before inserting it makes it easier to keep the stem in place and also fitting the tube into the tyre. Having split rims would make this job so much easier, you will find that when you replace your mower you get these awful solid rim things, and do not expect the job to go so easy as this demonstration shows, the old tyre will be really hard due to the sun for a start, and will refuse to come off the rim! Keep your split rims as long as you can! Chris B.

In my experience, unseating the tire from the rim without a tool designed to do that only works on tires that look like the one in this video: worn out and with weak sidewalls. I weigh 200lbs, and my weight plus a long handle crow bar will not unseat tires like this when the tire's in good shape.
@roseymalino9855

Those sidewall leaks are problematic to seal. I used Slime. I removed the wheel and laid it on its side so the sealant would spread on the sidewall. Then, because the opposite sidewall was also leaking, I turned it over so the sealant would cover that side. Even though this was successful, I definitely would not do it for highway use tires

Tire sealant won't hardly work on tire sidewalls. It works pretty good on the tread area. I always put a small fuel line hose clamp on the bottom of the valve stem when putting a tube in. You don't have to worry about loosing it even later on if you have a flat tire. It's not a good day when you come to use the tractor a few days later and discover you have a flat and the valve stem has disappeared back inside the rim. Ask me how I know.

Man, that washer idea is great. I tried installing one for the first time. Started airing up and it sucked back inside. Problem was, i couldn't deflate it to get it off to get to the stem. I found another trick was to use a locking chuck that clips on the stem when airing up tires. Remove the schrader valve and clip the chuck on there. Without the schrader valve if it sucks back in again all the air will flow out of the tube.

3 frigging beers and I had go look you up. I did this before but I don't remember struggling this much. Thanks man. Doing this on my snowblower. I couldn't get the wheel off because it is rusted solid to the shaft, so I flipped the blower on its side. I waited till now because I drained the oil (and gas) for the annual oil change. Any tips on getting that wheel off in the future? I thought about torching it once I had the rubber off, but I decided not to..

Not Steve, but spray some PB Blaster on the wheel and shaft and let it penetrate for a while. Some folks make a mixture of acetone and ATF fluid as a rust release agent. The acetone/ATF actually has been better than any commercial solvent as seen in many independent tests.

One additional washer trick. After you put the washer on, instead of a cap to hold it, use a tire valve extension. then the washer is still on there during tire inflation.. also, I am not a fan of big screwdrivers. harbor freight has 16" tire spoons for cheap money and they are not as likely to scratch up the rims and later cause the paint to rust Milton has 4 metal ones for about $5

Meant to say that Milton has 4 metal valve stem extensions for $5 to old that washer on the valve stem
