This is by far one of the BEST tutorials on "How To Install A Hot Water Heater" that I've ever seen. Everything was pretty much elementary step-by-step. And to think what some of these plumbing company want to charge to do what he did in less than an hour is absolutely RIDICULOUS! I'm pretty handy and have always thought about replacing my own water heater since it would be a simple removal of the old and install new one with new fittings. I'm definitely going to save this video in my DYI folder for future reference.

My water heater went out on Friday July 5. I called some plumbers for a quote, and most were in the high $800 range. Decided to youtube it. Saw many videos from various sources, but yours was the most simplest, step by step video out there. After watching it twice, I decided to go ahead and take the plunge and replace water heater on my own. I'm not an expert handyperson, but watching your video twice gave me the courage to do it. Thanks a bunch for the simple explanations. You rock!

I consider myself an above average diy homeowner, taking on every project from threading black pipe to lime repointing. But this video educated me. Not so much on what he was talking about, but with how skillfully he did the fundamentals. Tube cutting, torch lighting, wrenching, etc. All were done with brute speed and yet the finesse that comes with years of experience. I can get nearly equal results but it takes me 10 times as long. Much thanks for the education!

Thanks Danny. God bless you man. If I could give you more than 1 thumb I would. This really helped me a lot. I have straight pipes running on the old water heater that has gone bad after 20 years. I was worried about what to do, it looked like a lot of cutting and adjusting of rigid straight copper pipes and brass gas line was in order. But you solved that concern for me, now I know, I can go with flex pipes for both gas and water lines. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video...as I'm not an experienced plumber. I will admit that I bit-off more than I could chew but was successful in the end. This task took me 10 hours to complete (read on). Note: The confined space was located in the garage. And let me tell you; it’s been hot hear in Texas lately. Heck, it’s been so hot…I saw Superman in taxi cab. Anyway, I removed the original faulty water heater according to the video instructions. It was very obvious that every water line connection showed signs for water leakage and the connections seemed delicate/fragile to the touch. Nevertheless, I unpackaged the new water heater and installed all of the nipple fittings and used plenty of Teflon tape and paste for the gas line. I lifted the semi-heavy water heater into this confined space and installed the water heater according to the video instructions. I turned-on both the gas and water supply valves and lit the gas pilot per the manufactures instructions. However, the gas burner failed to light up and water began to leak at the ball valve. The brand new water heater came defective from the factory. I troubleshot as best I could and eventually contacted Whirlpool Technical Support. Unfortunately, the Whirlpool Help Desk technician (desk jockey), gave me a hard time all the way through. He said I needed a volt meter to help him troubleshoot. I told him I would have bought at volt meter at the time of buying the water heater if that was part of the installation process. He then wanted me to fax him the purchase receipt. In the end, he gave me a "Return Merchandise Authorization" number to replace the unit back to Lowes. Well, I reversed everything I had just done and returned the unit back to Lowes (2.5-hour road trip)…and made a pit stop at Chik-Fil-A. I looked like a mess. Fortunately, there was only 1 water heater left in the store. While in the store, I recalled the water supply line ball valve back at the house being leaky at the handle. But, the valve was soldered onto the water supply line. The only way to replace the ball valve was to cut it off at the supply line. So, I decided to buy ¾” “Blue Hawk” push fittings and new compression connection water hoses. I got back to the house and went to cutting the pipe. Immediately, water began to spew everywhere. I nearly "sharted" in the process because I had forgot to shut-off the main water line. I ran out of the garage like a chicken with its head cut-off and found the man-hole cover and water main by the side-walk. I popped man-hole cover open and frogs jumped out at me from every direction…and so did I. These guys were fat and juicy-looking. Again, I nearly “sharted” myself. I shut the water-line off and the water stopped flowing. Whew! I sanded the supply/return lines and installed the push fittings and new water compression connection water hoses. At this time, I became very tired and wired and almost started to laugh…”like what the !@#$ did I get myself into?” So there I am trying to fit this water heater that kept slipping through my sweaty hands and arms. I gave about 5 attempts and kept getting tired and tired. Finally, I slid the water heater in-place (nearly sharting again) and reconnected everything. I turned-on the gas and water supply valves and bled the lines. There weren't any leaks and hot water was regained. SUCCESS!!! By this time, I was wet with sweat from my head down to my butt. I collected all of my tools and drove home. BTW: I secretly took-on this task to surprise my best friend and his wife, who are on vacation. Now you understand why I was a bit terrified throughout the entire process. Next task…the new sink and garbage disposal. Wish me luck!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I was beginning to start sweating about sweating… I have watched enough and done enough to feel confident to sweat more pipes. The copper flexi-pipe you just showed however, looks like it will handily replace the stainless steel braided RUBBER tubing which I believe is causing black micro-particles to show up in in the tub two years after install of a New water heater… Apparently it's the rubber inside the stainless steel braid that breaks down where are you have chlorinated city water.... And while I was willing to replace the s.s. braided hose with freshly sweated three-quarter inch copper, I think you have just saved me a ton of time!...shee-it, and I was going to be so proud to show my sweating-prowess... Ahhhhhhh welllll.... ...grinnnn... So thanks again, Chas
