Well put together video.the information is spot on with the tools available for the average home owner The tricks for preparation installing and or removing the tub drain The only thing you really really should’ve added is so vital if not done no matter if you get the drain out and perfectly reinstalled it will definitely leak. Y’all ready for this It’s the gasket under the tub that goes sandwiched in between the the female part of the tub drain assemble and the tub

I used the extractor, the one that you pounded in, and I used a ratchet w 1/2" drive, and the brass fitting broke off! The stoopid thing wouldn't come out w the extractor still in it. So I had to drill some holes around it (I'm replacing the bathtub stall). I also couldn't remove the handles for the hot and cold w a puller. So I had to drill holes around it. Fml

I have a drain where the cross bars are broken but there were only THREE, instead of four. So unfortunately I cant use the plier handle method. Or the fork or dumbbell. I guess I will have to break down and get one of the friction tools. I really don’t want to have to use a saws-all if i can help it, even though i feel like i can trust myself with it.

Tub drain war story. Started with the dumbbell, cross broke out. Went to the extractor. Did get it to bite strong enough to get it to start to rotate. Wasn't rotating what was supposed to. It was so stuck that it broke off at the joint and was turning the shoe. Got it out. Still had to cut in from a closet wall and replace the shoe. Fortunately, above the slab.

I love the advice and tool demonstration in this vid, but I gotta say, be very, VERY careful if you decide to do this on your own. Matter of fact, think twice before deciding to go at it. If the drain pipe is under tension and you pull the drain adapter out, you’re basically screwed (ESPECIALLY if you’re on a slab).
@BurnerTurner

You're definitely screwed on a slab but not crawlspace. If anyone wants to buy a new home I suggest not going with a slab built house even if it's cheaper. If on a slab then it's time to bust out the concrete saw lol.

I came up with a new one recently. 1946 tub and original drain. Could not get it. I cut my dumb bell in half, got a 1 1/8 impact socket and went after it with my impact 🤣 Worked like a charm. I wouldn’t recommend this idea unless you’re replacing the whole tub drain. Got away with it this time though.
@liablenpliabler

Ya I've used a 1/2 inch drive in my impact cuz the tub drain extractor that I use has a hole for it I've had to use some heat before that also worked but really carefully ....not going to use a 18 volt saws all on anyone's tub way to risky not going to take that chance of rattling around and than cast breaks

Question: Are you using Teflon tape and pipe dope on the threads of the drain because you are not replacing the shoe to tube gasket and want the "seal" to be at the threads along with plumbers putty under the drain flange and not the shoe gasket. Actually now that I think about it the threads don't seal the tub drain shoe to the drain, the putty does along with the gasket. I don't see how all of the Teflon tape and pipe dope keep the tub from leaking unless the drain stops up.
