Those patches that you discovered on the roof are there for a reason. They allow you to install wiring into the inside of the van. I think you cut a hole in your roof for no reason? 😱

If you go back and watch the video, at 1:02, you can see that underneath the patches there are M8 metric nuts that are fabricated into the build. That’s what I used to attach the roof rack to with M8 bolts.

Nice, thanks for posting. Found this on the Ford USA forum initially. Also like that you show the products you use rather than just talk about them. Visual is useful. Yes, the ford forum is a great community.

Not sure if you're still active or not but this is the first video I've come across that discusses the angle of the support your L-bracket sits on. How did you determine that the HDPE needed to be cut at a 6 degree angle? (Thanks in advance.)

I parked my van on a flat surface and kept trimming the HDPE, checking with a level each time until it was perfectly level. The 6 degrees refers to the angle I set my table saw blade to when cutting the HDPE to make it level for my brackets. Hope this helps!

@@ChilliesWorld Thank you! That definitely helps. I wasn't sure about the level application because nothing is truly "level" in a vehicle given the surface it's sitting on and the the variable air pressure across the 4+ tires. Thanks for the tip though I will definitely try this install application on my Shuttle Bus conversion.

Hi, are there any crossbeams to support the panels or is it just the panel running across? I'm always afraid of the wind running below such a large surface area. Is it rigid or does it vibrate a bit if you give is a little pounding on the framing? BTW I believe there are 80/20 nuts with a ball bearing that holds itself in place so you find the hole easier.

Hi John, There are no cross beams except the one in the back that has my rear view dash camera on it. Was going to put in cross beams but the panels are rigid and the edges lined up perfectly with the 80/20. The 2 inches thick panels became cross beams. No vibration. Also no wind sounds when driving. Driven 80 mph with strong cross winds with no issues. I will definitely use those 80/20 nuts with the ball bearing next project. it would save me a lot of time.

@@ChilliesWorld Thanks, I appreciate the response. Your solar install looks the cleanest I've seen and is apparently very solid. Will definitely apply your methods to my build.

What's the maximum width of the panels you could safely install this way (less worried about stealth)? Trying to figure out how to get more than 800W on same van (it's on order). Thanks for the video!

Hey James, I'm not sure of the maximum width it will hold. The panels I used just happened to line up with the 80/20 racks edges perfectly. The basic rack itself is strong and can probably hold wider panels. Hope this helps. Let me know what you end up doing.
