beginner question: every Linux comes with a pre-installed Python. Why is there even a need to install another version?

Check the version of gcc ( $gcc --version ), update to latest version or newly install gcc ( $sudo apt install build-essential and $sudo apt-get install manpages-dev ). Then try the python installation.

Thanks. This works on MX Linux but I got an error after using the"./configure" command saying "configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH". This was fixed by installing Build Essential with "sudo apt-get install build-essential".

I think your system is missing some dependencies, you have to install the dependencies first, Try below code first and then repeat the python installation as in the video. $sudo apt install libssl-dev libffi-dev libncurses5-dev zlib1g zlib1g-dev libreadline-dev libbz2-dev libsqlite3-dev make gcc Hope this will fix your issue.
