I came here specifically to see if you could remove the ball joint without having to first taking out the axle from the hub to gain access ball joint nut. That's what the repair manual says. I was not disappointed. Great simple move on the ball joint and solid DIY.

A couple of things: First, from my experience, if you remove the nut from the stabilizer link like this it may twist and destroy the ball & socket joint (of said stabilizer link). I had to replace them later because they popped on hill turns, and were torn up upon inspection - who knows maybe they were bad already. Second, if you are doing this on jackstands, I found that the through bolt on the control arm (which is a beast) can be best removed by removing the wheel, grasping the bolt head with a wrench, and while seated push down on a breaker bar with your steel toe & with a 6 point socket on the nut - It scereched like a banshee but I barely was able to muscle off the drivers side thru bolt this way. The passenger side (RH) through bolt is much easier to get at. Also dont forget to do final torque when lowered to ground - otherwise you'll mess up the bushing.

How easy is it to access the bolts to torque when lowered to the ground? Planning to do this soon. Worried about removing the through bolts on jackstands though.

@@abbas431 Why are you worried, the control arm isn't that heavy and if you stand by the rotor you won't be under the car for the through bolt - the others, of course yes, but they aren't your worry. I don't recall that torquing on the ground was ridiculously hard, but it was a bit tricky -you can do it though. I recently changed my front shocks and could not remove the 12mm strut to knuckle bolt with the 18 inch 1/2" drive I used above and only succeeded with a 36" 3/4 drive breaker bar from Menards. It is pricey at $45 bucks but you may wish to consider it, looking back I wish I had. Good luck!

@@davidm3210 cheers David...just seen your response. It gives me more confidence to tackle it. Just one more question. Did you need some sort of a chisel as in this video to pry out the ball joint bolt?
@davidm3210

@@abbas431 Yes, there are two types but I used the one that looks like a pickle fork and you can get them for about $12 - you slide the prongs/tines around the joint and whack the other end with a hammer a couple of times and it will separate Many people just bang on the knuckle, but some frown on that, and I say get the right tool. I advise you to change the passenger side first as it will be easier and give you some insights to tackle the driver side. Remember to hold the inner nut behind the bushings of the stabilizer links with an open ended wrench when tightening the bolt on the underside of the control arm so it doesn't get twisted and damaged. Follow the video and take a look in the Haynes manual and you should succeed - but set aside the day.
