If you nail on, or near the tar strip on your starter, it will hold the bottom row down in a similar fashion to the way your rows of shingles adhere to one another. Nailing high like that allows the bottom reveal to lift with wind.

So you leave a leading edge with no sealant on it… if you cut rake and drip sides at a 45 and miter the joints it’s a continuous seal all the way around!😉

You put the second one on upside down that adhesive is meant to have a nail go through it to hold the shingle to the roof and it seals against the other shingles regardless of whether it's the first run or not

1” is too much. Will get damaged in hi winds. Not recommended.

1/8 for starter and 1/8 for shingle making half inch total. 1 inch is too much.

Not always required, especially being a shed. However is always recommended and is good practice. Helps keep any potential leaks from damaging your roof decking.
