I bought the same upgrade kit to increase storage for a customer, and yesterday installed it. What you are not mentioning in this otherwise excellent video is the ability to "clone" the old HD to the new one. I discovered this the hard way. Initially I was going to backup the old 120GB HD, but the old drive must have 15% free space to do this. This MacBook Air was chock full and the backup failed. I even called Apple support to no avail. What I was not aware of was how easy to clone from old to new, once I figured that out it was easy. Once you have installed the new drive, and put the old one in the enclosure, here are the steps, which are NOT documented with the kit: 1. Install the original (small capacity) Apple SSD drive into the enclosure 2. Install the new (larger capacity) OWC drive into the computer 3. Plug the enclosure into the USB port, then Boot into the Recovery Console (Command R, not Command Option R) 4. Use the Disk Utility and choose RESTORE. This will CLONE the old HD to the new one. The whole process took 10 minutes, and once done the computer was booting from the freshly cloned new HD. After that, I did a backup, THEN upgraded to Catalina/Big Sur. All customer settings were preserved, including email, which does NOT happen when using Internet Recovery (Command Option R) and restore from backup. Cloning saves a bunch of time. I am keeping the enclosure kit for next time, and will order only the SSD (not the kit) for future upgrades! Cloning is the way to go!

Hello, I came across this really helpful advice just when I was about to buy this kit. However, regarding the very simple steps outlined re. using disk utility to restore from old drive. There’s just one step I was unclear of firstly do I need to format the new drive first using disk utility before hitting restore to clone old drive? Please could you just clarify this. Many thanks in advance:-)

Backup the internal SSD to the new SSD first - put the new SSD in the Envoy, connect to the Mac, clone the drive. Now do the install. You get to test the new SSD before it goes into the Mac. You can even test booting the Mac from the new SSD.
@RecordingStudioRockstars

Chris Janton that sounds like good advice to test your drive first if you can. But last time I tried that it would not format properly until had installed it in the computer first with my MacBook Pro. And this worked great. If the new Drive had not worked out it would’ve been very easy to put the old drive back in.

I did this way and the OWC just did not want to be formatted so I am going to do it the opposite way. Install High Sierra on the small drive in the machine then format the OWC in the enclosure using utilities then install High Sierra on it. Because My machine just did not want the see the drive at all. Even the techs at apple did not know how to format the drive in my mac book air. Any who thanks the info. c];-)

I upgraded my iMac ( 21.5) 2017. Now it has a SSD and 32 G of RAM. But upgraded from Mojave to Monterey. After I was trying to get driver for my interface ( t.c. Electronics Konnekt 24D) but does not support Monterey and suddenly my iMac gets black screen. Since I was planning doing the upgrade in my MBA influenced by your wonderful video, the question is: Could I use the backup of the AIr and install it on the iMac.. OF course, I would keep Mojave on both computers but the iMac would work with 32m RAM and use it with logic audio. Also could use the interface and not upgrade anymore. I do not know what to do for fixing the black screen on the IMac. And looks like it would not be very convenient install logic audio pro on MBA? But you say you are using protools with MBA .? I am little bit lost. Any help/ advice please?

Sorry to hear that you have had trouble with yours. Im not sure I understand your situation exactly but I bet you could migrate over to the iMac and work there instead. My MBA works and I believe I have been able to open Pro Tools on it but I’m not actually using it for production. I have used it for Final Cut Pro video editing. Really I just use it as a remote control laptop in my studio (my studio computer is a Max Mini). The e landed SSD allows me to download files as needed although I think it also my have shortened my battery life sightless due to increased size. As far as the black screen I would try rebooting and reinstalling MacOSX to fix it if you can get it to work yet. Hope that helps!

By the way, you can also buy something much cheaper than just OWC. If your Mac is updated to Mojave (which added non-OWC and non-Apple SSD support) you can buy something else. And when Mojave was not here, the only working drives were OWC and genuine Apple SSD’s pulled straight out of a MacBook.

Hello mate, thanks for the video. Which SSD is the faster one? The aura Pro X2 or the original Apple SSD
@RecordingStudioRockstars
Жыл бұрын
I don’t know the answer, technically. But I do think there is also something to be said for the efficiency of the computer with the original driver mode. I think it might use less batteries. However, after I upgraded, I was able to use the computer with more apps and Dropbox, etc..

Thank you for your video. I am still confused. If the original SSD is dead and you want to put Aura Pro X as your NEW drive, with nothing on it, what is the procedure? Command+Option+R only gives me the option to reinstall the old MacOS X not MacOS (High Sierra, Mojave or Catalina). The explanations from OWC are very confusing and there is always the supposition that you are just "Upgrading" from the original storage device.
@RecordingStudioRockstars

As I recall you just install the older Mac OS and then use the App Store upgrade from there.

Hmm. Now that you ask I would say that my battery life is a bit shorter than when I first got the laptop. I hadn’t considered it related to the SSD but perhaps? However being able to work with this laptop now because it has useful drive space is great! Cheers

I tried to reset SMC by keystroke and disconetion of the battery. but that did not help. Any suggestions? PS: Mac is running, SSD seems to be avialible KG Timo

Did you not get the upgrade kit with the external case and tools? I recommend getting the upgrade kit if you can get it. Otherwise, take a look at drive backup solutions like Carbon Copy Cleaner of Chronosync to copy over the boot drive contents to a different external drive if you need it. But honestly, is there much of anything on the original drive that you really need to copy over (considering that it's so small)? If all you need is your Apple ID and to redownload a few apps for the app store then it's not really all that important I don't think. I always start with a fresh install on my new drives anyway. So that means you need to install all the apps you need on the new drive. Does that help?

For example like I said in the video make sure your iCloud has finished syncing uploads since otherwise that would be files that still only live on your old drive.

Little confused here. Why do they say you need Mac OS 10.13+ if you’re installing a fresh copy. Let’s say you had a boot drive and want a new fresh copy, your computer isn’t running anything at this point. Maybe I’m over thinking it. If I install the new SSD with nothing on it, will the USB installer drive see the new SSD??

@RecordingStudioRockstars

Bobby Simmons That might be related to needing a computer that will run a newer 0S in order for the SSD to function once it’s installed. Meaning as you install a fresh OS You might need to go straight to a newer version like 10.13
@poweredbyowc

There is a particular EFI update that the machine needs in order to see the NVMe drive type correctly. This EFI update was included in OS 10.13 and later installers, but will only apply correctly if that installation is done on an Apple drive that's inside the machine. So the machine just has to had been running an OS at 10.13 or higher before putting in an NVMe like the Aura Pro X2, so that it will recognize it correctly, and you can then install your OS or back up onto it.

Well, it’s all because you have may not backed up your Mac. It’s important to back up before upgrading. But, if you did not erase your original Apple ssd, you can just buy a usb to m.2 adapter and then you clone the original ssd to the 1 tb drive which you do by entering recovery mode (cmd K after chime) and then formatting your 1tb to what was the original one formatted to (if you have macOS journaled, format the 1tb to macOS journaled and if it was afps then afps) and you then clone it. Please like my reply if that helped you any.
